Hi,

Some advice from those who've sold 'exotic' watches on ebay please. I'm considering selling, and I've had the usual
rubbish offers from watch resellers, so I'm considering ebay. I've sold quite a bit before, but typically only low value items.

My plan is the following:

- Take payment via paypal only
- Require buyer to collect
- Do not accept a return once collected

Does this sound reasonable? Advice appreciated. Thanks.

I sold a Tudor GMT recently, I took cash on collection (bank transfer).

Only issue with doing that is, you have to finish the item as "no longer available" then eBay try to warn you as they dont get any fees for doing it this way.

How will you prove delivery if it’s a collection?! PayPal will side with the buyer too.

I tried to send my number to a buyer who'd messaged about my Omega asking for contact details, and I received a pop-up warning me that I'd be charged a Final Value fee if I proceeded.

I need to get round to listing on Chrono24 when I have a minute to go through their verification process of taking photos of the watch with the hands set to a certain time.

Thanks for replies.

I'm not trying to avoid the ebay sellers fee, just avoid a transaction going wrong.

I'm sure they'd filter for that somehow.

I've heard stories of warnings for sale outside of eBay issued retrospectively so they must be trawling through constantly, not just where the system automatically detects numbers etc.

Ebay works for me maybe 2/10 times - 95% of people are time wasters.

Pistonheads ads - Never once had so much as 1 email out of maybe 30 watches i've sold. Don't bother.

Chrono24 - Best of all the platforms and safest for buyer / seller. Fees the same as ebay and no jokers.

Cash on collection only !!! Someone pays with paypal and then collects you are stuffed.

I only sell cash on collection now on eBay unless it's something I can afford to lose.

No problem is buyer pays with PayPal and then collects.

If you accept paypal with collection you WILL be scammed...just don't do it.
Cash/bank transfer on collection only (this is permitted with collection listings - there is a specific phrase you are allowed to put, something like 'please contact me for methods of payment on collection'). You do still have to list with paypal but you do not have to accept it.

eBay offer £1 final selling fees every other weekend it seems, make sure you use that.

Cash on Collection is the only way with a watch imho.

I sold my Steinhart Ocean One on eBay, guy was a tit and had to refund 50%.

Omega Seamaster through Gumtree, paid BT and I sent next day, really nice guy.

Rolex Datejust through Gumtree, guy turned up, was really nice, paid BT and went on his way happy.

Payment via paypal and collection only is a recipe for disaster.

Cash on collection or bank transfer prior to collection are your best options.
Even paypal and posting it can cause headaches, as ebay and/or paypal will generally go with the buyer if they raise any kind of dispute.

I wouldn't sell anything high value on eBay. They tend to side with the buyer if problem arise. The chancers out there know this and will try to take advantage.
Plus you have the combined PayPal Ebay fees which erode any deal.
If you are a relatively new seller, eBay/Paypal will also hold on to your money for up to three weeks and anything negative from the buyer could prolong this significantly. Even with low value watches, I take a series of high res photos at all angles to mitigate any bs feedback on it's condition.
I haven't tried Chrono 24 but their arrangements seem to be a bit more robust and almost all the dealers use it, which must be a good sign.

Exactly. Listing (ad) like that can be specifically targeted by scumbags.

do not use PayPal ....open to so many scams ......for example ...you get paid via PayPal, you send the watch, the seller tells you its fake and sends you back a fake watch, and reclaims the money from PayPal

I have bought on eBay but would never sell. Chrono24 is the way to go and the price I got for an IWC was definitely higher than my expectation on eBay.

The suggested sale price on chrono24 can be a little ambitious though. Check on eBay for completed listings and set your expectation there. Stick it on 24 a little lower than their suggested price but that should still have you above eBay prices.

The only way to accept PayPal is by “gift”. This removes all the protection to the buyer though so if a seller suggested it I would expect scam. However, I have bought this way at my request because I cut the PayPal fees which saved significant money. All risk was on me though so I did some black belt level cyber stalking of the sellers before proceeding.

How is Chrono24 any different? I can't understand how their Escrow service prevents this where PayPal doesn't.
