Hi All,

This is my first ever topic start so please be kind. I have recently returned from holiday - as we were trying to travel light I took only one watch. I deliberated long and hard and chose my bronze CW Trident GMT. I chose this as I knew I’d be snorkelling and it had decent water resistance, the GMT was handy for keeping track of time back home and, with a quick strap change, the watch would be reasonably smart for an evening without attracting unwanted attention. On top of this, it has some sentimental value as my wife got me it for my fortieth. I also assumed it would be reliable as it is less than a year old.

Unbelievably, it stopped working 6 days into a 14 day holiday.

I am about to send it back for repairs, but it got me wondering: is there a mechanical (or at least interesting movement) watch that does everything whilst still being reliable and not so expensive that you wouldn’t dare wear it in certain places? On paper the CW did nearly everything I wanted (apart from chronograph) but it proved unreliable. This is sort of a hypothetical question but I may also be tempted to buy a temporary replacement while I’m without mine...

You were unlucky I think, though it's going to have to be quartz for improved reliability. Or just take three cheap Chinese automatic GMT divers!

Citizen BJ7071 is quite smart.

Sinn is probably the answer.

Interesting you’re having issues with your CW - I do hope their quality control isn’t slipping...

I had a C60 trident a couple of years back, and it was faultless, the movement lost maybe a second per day, less than my sub which cost an obvious amount more.

Fast forward and I’ve sold that one and bought another (regretted selling) and I’ve had to send it off within a month as it’s gaining a minute in less than 3 days. Also nonplussed with their customer services at this moment in time...

Another vote for Sinn, never had one but they’re a very well respected brand with good lineage etc. Maybe Bulova would get my vote, I like their style - although I can’t attest to the waterproofness etc if you require such things.

Thanks so far guys. I am tempted by a Seiko Kinetic diver so I’m pleased Tall Martin suggested it. I hadn’t thought of Sinn though I have seen a lot of recommendations on this forum in the past. Where do you find them? Are they mail only?

I really hope there isn’t a problem with their customer services. I haven’t sent the watch back yet but I have to say I’m already disappointed that a new watch let me down. I’m hoping I was just unlucky and it will be resolved quickly. It’s a nice watch.

I really like this but I don’t know if I could cope without a traditional divers bezel. Love that it looks smart for an evening though.

There are several U.K. dealers but not sure if any have showrooms.

This ticks all your boxes and I'm seriously tempted myself:

That is absolutely fantastic. I liked it immediately but it’s way over my budget. Having read about it and its technology I’m absolutely smitten. I’m applying man maths - if I kept it for 20 years I’d save a fortune on servicing.

Unfortunately, I still think it’s out of reach. But what a watch. There’s one with red detailing and a tachymetre that’s also fantastic!

Vostok Amphibian!

I have one - or rather, HAD one, as my wife’s taken a fancy to it, pinched it and won’t give it back to me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The ultimate versatile watch is the F91-W.

Another thought
Magrette Moana Pacific Kara (if you can find one) - titanium cased, 500m water resistance and lovely details with the engraving on the back, sapphire case back and crystal and clever crown unscrewed warning. Also the Magrette Waterman Bronze.

My dad returned his CW twice about 2 years ago due to losing or gaining time (can’t remember which). After the second time he asked for his money back.

Probably just unlucky but I feel it’s worth mentioning here regardless.

While I too like Bulova and Sinn, my pick of the bunch would be Damasko for outstanding build quality thumbup

Both Chronomaster and Jura are authorised dealers for Damasko.
