I’m looking for a dress watch as a gift, for the right watch I could stretch to £600 but sub £400 would be better.

New or vintage (but would prefer to avoid modern second hand)

Automatic or manual wind, but not quartz.

They would love a Rolex but I know that’s 10x budget. So had thought Is there a old Tudor model that might be scrape into budget?

Any suggestions? Or brands models I should keep an eye out for?

I'm a big fan of the Junghans Max Bill range, like this one.

These can be had for less than £600. They are well made for the price I think. I have a couple, and wear them a fair bit.

All will be in your budget. Creation Watches often have some very sharp pricing especially on Hamilton.

Way under your budget, but I really like my Orient Bambino. I don't know what more I would want in a dress watch.

Was going to suggest Orient too, whilst a dress watch isn’t my thing (however that Bambino does look lovely) I'm very impressed with my Orient Mako XL.

Orient seem to be ridiculous value for money, I believe they make their own automatic movement too.

Orient Star Classic - a little smaller than a Bambino and slightly more traditional, so more appropriate as a dress watch. Just avoid the rattly OEM bracelet. Mine is on a Fluco stingray strap.

As others have said, Visodate is a lovely classic piece. Can’t go wrong.

The moment I saw the brief an Orient bambino was going to be my suggestion.

Seiko Cocktail Time does the trick for me whenever I want to look smart, or a dive watch wouldn't look write under the shirt cuff.

Yeah, the Seiko SARB065 Cocktail Time is a wonderful watch and under budget.

They’re much loved by their owners apparently!

I'm in a similar position. I've always loved the Visodate. They are a lovely classic design. I tried one on a couple of weeks back and I really didn't like it on my wrist. It was a lot taller than I thought it would be. I'm looking at cocktail times now but I want to try one on before deciding.

Another one way under your budget but the Timex Marlin seems to be well regarded by watch fans

Having seen the cocktail time in flesh I was immediately in love. Unfortunately I have no requirement for another dress watch so never bought. I would say however that it was a bit large for my dress watch tastes. (I prefer the vintage sizing for dress).

I previously had a Bambino in grey which I loved. Looked great and wore brilliantly. Again I was using it as a daily rather than a dress watch. I unfortunately dropped it from about waist height while on holiday and the watch stopped working.

I think of you really scour you should be able to find a good vintage omega for £600. Be careful though as there's many frankenwatches out there.

Longines have some really nice dress pieces which can be found for £600-800. Maybe worth a look?
