Hi all,

It’s a few years since I used diamond geezer. At the time they were very cheap compared to the high street and their customer service was also faultless.

They’ve now rebranded to Comparethediamond. Are they still as competitive as they used to be? They still seem to offer higher quality for lower cost than the high street. Anyone used them recently?

Try the watch forum, there tends to be some jewellery stuff in there from time to time, I think blue Nile (?) get mentioned reasonably positively.

Depends what you want from it. Cheap stone or a good deal? A good deal usually comes from a good independent. A cheap stone is cheap for a reason.

Also, support for small businesses and not internet box pushers is what will help our economy.

I’m guessing you’ve not used them then? The engagement ring I bought was a very high quality diamond. Much higher than almost all high street jewellers could provide at the time.

No, can't say I have. Also, I didn't know stones from the internet were better quality than those coming out of a shop. Maybe from a different mine?

It is not hard to beat large chain high street jewellers when it comes to quality.

Dealing with a good independent, whether a jeweller or designer, who know what they are talking about when it comes to diamonds will give you a good deal.

Just out of interest how do you know the diamond was a high quality one?

James Allen were really good, I bought a engagement ring, around 1.5CT (total), 1+0.52 (ish) for around 1/2 the price of the high street (+ taxes).

Imported form the USA,all stones had a video / close up, people available to talk you through each stone, its quality / benefits, they even found a better stone than the one i picked for less money (i can't remember exactly, but down 0.01ct and up 1 clarity / 1 colour for example).

Couldn't recommend them enough, looking for our wedding rings off there at the moment.

Always get nice compliments about the ring too smile (not me, but my girlfriend)

Cheers. Ecain above doesn’t seem to realise how poor his large chain high street bought diamonds are.

Mine was / is a natural mined diamond, GIA certified, round brilliant cut. Colour E. Clarity VVS1. Cut, polish and symmetry all excellent. No fluorescence. And of course the size.

Im placing the order for the second one today.

Yeah, I'm really not that clued up on the highstreet jewellery market. It'd be interesting to see what the certificate says for your stone.

Hahah. Regarding good deals, the ring Eddie made for me was valued for insurance by another independent at way more than I paid.

Does the certificate tell you how much profit the vendor needs to make to cover their overheads?

Just another +1 for James Allen. I've imported three diamonds from them over the years; one for an engagement ring and a matching pair for earings.

As mentioned above they are half the price, expert and safe to deal with.

In answer to the 'how do you know it's a good diamond' question above, all the JA diamonds are GIA certified and laser engraved with a matching serial number.

No, but the certificate details will tell me if it's a desirable stone or not. The obvious colour / clarity argument doesn't tell more than half the story.

I'm not criticising any outlet for price or quality, but i deal with emails daily from people asking if we can price match. The reason for the way stones are priced need more investigation then just looking at whether it's GIA or not.

GIA is just a grading lab. It adds security and resale potential, it doesn't add quality.

Not here to create arguments or pinch customers. Just keen to see the facts and pass an informed opinion.

For the record, I attended and came top of my GIA grading lab back in 2007. I was on there with experienced sellers from well known global auction houses and London diamond dealers. I'd literally just started in the trade but because of my blank canvas approach wasn't swayed by bad habits. I rarely use the qualification in my job but i know a good stone and a cheap stone wink

Surely you'll get much more bang for your buck going the second-hand/antique route?

I always buy vintage for my wife, but I prefer the tones of the gold, and the designs, anyway.
