No idea where to post this but thought watches may be closest...
I’d like to buy a plain gold chain/necklace but not sure where to start. I’m guessing high street shops are good bet for assurance of quality but at a price. Lots of online sellers are cheaper but can they be trusted?
Budget of up to £1,000.

I pity the fool who buys their gold chains online.

Pawn shop? Presumably they check stuff before they accept it.

Your best bet is buying secondhand from a reliable outlet. You'll get more gold weight for your money that way. I’d like to buy a plain gold chain/necklace but not sure where to start. Out of interest (and because I sell them), what style are you looking for? What are you expecting as a weight?

You could try Saviles of Leeds, although I'm not sure if they are still trading.
If you are anywhere near Birmingham, it might be worth having a mooch around the jewellery quarter. Lots of jewellers in one place, so you should get an idea of styles and prices.
