Hi folks.

I have this Seiko 5 which is starting to run faster and faster:

It's always gained a minute or two over a few days, but now a minute on the watch takes about 58 seconds and it is soon way off.

Is this something that can be sorted by a watch hospital type place or has it had it?

You could try de-magnetising it. The gubbins are about a tenner on eBay etc.

Any half decent watch repair shop should be able to sort that. Try Riggathemighty on here.

Could be a "hooked up" hairspring - the outer coil can get caught on the regulator pin or the stud, effectively shortening the hairspring and making the watch run fast.

It's a fairly common problem with the 7s26 movement fitted to low-end Seiko automatics. I did one a couple of days ago, simple fix once the caseback has been removed - a gentle prod with a suitable tool, and it pops back into place.

By far the most likely cause is that it is magnetized. Check it with a cheap compass - see if it moves the needle.

If it is, buy a mains (not battery) demag tool like this.

You'll need a mains adaptor or shaver socket.

As above, demagnetiser and download the lepsi app

I’ve never been sure about Lepsi. If I am concerned about a mechanical watch’s state of magnetism I wouldn’t intuitively place it next to an electronic device. I’ve no evidence that it makes any difference, mind you.

All my mechanical watches become magnetised and my smart phone has long been on the list of possible sources.

Interesting to read about magnetism (magnetisation?). Is it possible to walk it to a dealer and have a watch de-magnetised while you wait?

I am picking up a 2019 Omega Railmaster this afternoon and they are resistant to 15,000 Gauss so that’s one watch I don’t need to worry about.

Yes it takes seconds. If they have the equipment that is.

Thanks guys.

I'll look into getting it demagnetised before anything else.

Doesn't look you can get lepsi for Android.

Yeah I'm finding an appreciation for Pig & Hen. This was given to me but I like the look of what is available.
