Morning guys,

Ok this isn’t watches, but seemed the best place to ask, we want to buy my wife a new wedding ring (platinum and diamond), she has picked one from a high street jewellers for about £2,500 and I personally don’t like the generic experience of buying from a high street in the UK.

We were wondering if we could travel abroad, and buy more “direct” and may get the same quality ring for less, meaning the break may be paid for and more memories around buying it?

Only stipulation is it’s a proper legitimate jeweller, not some backstreet or home based setup, and it’s a country that we would like to visit, no point saying diamonds are cheap in Somalia!

Thanks all, appreciate the thoughts

Bringing it back in from abroad may have import tax issues wink

Have a look at some online jewellers too.

www.bluenile.co.uk have a great reputation.

I’m sure others will be along soon with other suggestions.

Also try some smaller U.K. jewellers rather than main high street brands. Usually better quality for a better price!

Why don’t you get something made? There are loads of people out there who will custom make rings.

Or go to Hatton Garden and have a good shop around. Loads of deals to be done there, you just have to have a good idea what you want.

I'm still making and repairing. Some process are a little slower in the lockdown but I'm still operating.

Buying abroad isn't always better and a high street purchase shouldn't be generic unless you're simply looking for a generic product or as cheap a price as possible.

Blue Nile has a great reputation because customers don't know what they are buying wink

I proposed to my partner in Dubai in October and had arranged to buy the ring on the same trip, had a few friends living in Dubai and both recommended Cara's (http://www.carajewellers.com/) online reviews appeared to back their opinion.

We got picked up from our hotel and the buying process was stress free and not pushy at all. We ended up walking out with a ring my partner loved within the hour (and I was worried she wouldn't be able to choose because she was fussy!)

Overall great experience and holiday we will remember fondly.

They can also design and make a ring within a few days.

No sales tax in Dubai, we saved quite a bit on a 1 carat ring compared to UK prices. Sent box and papers back by post.

Agreed that we have lots of choice in the UK, and custom made, even by a very well renouned Pistonheader is an option I'm keen to explore.

However, just for clarity, I'm wanting to go away and make an 'event' of this, memories, have a good excuse for a trip, and if thats funded partly by a better price for the ring, either through exchange rates or more direct from source, then great!

Pop to Jersey for a weekend,a good choice of outlets, including high street brands, you'll save the vat and also get 5% gst refund coming back through customs.

Not sure how you'll get there at the minute though.

In Oct 2019 we paid AED 20,500 with about a 1000 of this refunded at the airport (5% sales tax).

Cara’s in Dubai have a great reputation too. Think they have 7 of the shops in the diamond mall! They also come to the U.K. to a jewellery show as far as I remember.

Dubai is also a good place to go to for a short break. That’s if you can get there!

Eddie, I might have to take you up on your offer at some point of being better than blue Nile. My wife is in the market for something, she wants it now, but I’m not for 12 months due to the current situation!

We've bought from Hatton Garden a few times but you really need to know what you're after and an idea of what a 'good' price is otherwise you'll only make a small saving. More recently we got a ring made by www.77diamonds.com, they were the cheapest in the UK (online or offline) and had the benefit of a showroom in London so you could get 'hands-on' with the product unlike most other online-only retailers, Bluenile for instance. Really good to deal with and I doubt you would save much by travelling to Dubai based on the prices we saw at the time.

Can only recommend James at London Diamonds. Did everything over email/whatsapp, stone sourced and ring made in 2 weeks.

Bluenile is great if you just want a £ vs colour / clarity deal. There's a lot more to diamonds than just the certificate. Actually looking at the stone is the biggest part of it and you'll always find the visually better stones are priced the same or higher than a good independent.

Kiran and his team at Cara are a good bunch.

Lived in the region for a while and he was a go to guy.
