My 22yr old son is looking for his first proper watch for between £200-£300 , wants a mechanical and preferably black, I thought of Marloe, any other ideas? Thanks.

Yes one of the seiko would be good, I’d guess the skx009 now that the 007 is discontinued. Orient kamasu is pretty decent in this price range too. Laco do some just over budget if the flieger style is more appealing.

I know they can be a bit marmite but have you thought about a custom modified Seiko?

There are youtubers who offer the service and run through previous creations. Done with impressive attention to detail in some cases.

Diver -Citizen Promaster NY autos (not black but very reliable- my first auto or Orient
Pilot Avi-8 Flyboy
Field Seiko 5 ...the new ones are around that money and black or Orient
Skeleton Rotary

Check out the £200 thread too, often the budget is stretched a bit

Also don’t forget 2nd hand, I managed to get a cracking Certina DS Podium auto Chrono for less than £300.

There are also some great new Quartz watches out there in budget or a tiny bit over
Victorinox Inox
Citizen Nighthawk or Promaster Tough
Bulova Lunar Pilot (check HS Johnson for a black special edition)
Even 2nd hand Longines Conquest quartz not black though..

Bulova Lunar Pilot would get my vote.

Also any of the Dan Henry offerings.

These things are unbelievable and most likely more accurate than that £3k Rolex someone has, also the luminosity is fantastic at night even after 7 years

Certainly check out the £200 Watch thread for some inspiration.

My 2 cents at that price point and specification:

£244

If you want a bracelet, strapcode has got an entire selection. The standard jubilee on the SKX is a bit rattly, I wasn't a fan.

Yeah because £3K will just about get you a battered Datejust from 1981.

7 years in the dark....long night!

This 90s model looks a bit more recent than 1981, but probably wont be as reliable as that £300 Citizen

And its not just 80s Rolex they are more accurate than, i doubt any watch costing £10k would be much more accurate than one, especially the radio controlled models like the one i linked to. I like an accurate watch but don't really want to pay several thousand pounds, not that i cant plus there is less chance of having it swiped off your wrist in London

And its reassuring to see the second hand tick along to the clocks in airports and train seconds with pin point accuracy

Marloe is a good shout, this is my Coniston Steel which is a lovely watch for £299.

They don't do anything in black at your price point, but the Coniston Vulcan in grey looks nice:

Good luck finding something. smile

If your happy to go used.....

Seiko sumo can be had within budget.

Currently one available on tzuk 😉

I'm fairly sure the seller would work out a deal with a fellow PHr.
