I got a call this morning from a Rolex AD offering me a DJ41 silver face, and am in a bit of a conundrum of whether to go for it. (Steel, fluted bezel, jubilee)

I also have my name down at a different AD for a GMT Pepsi, which would be my number 1 choice but as yet no call.

I do like the DJ and it is different from my other watches - Divers predominantly, & would be my first Rolex.

So... it’s a classic and everlasting style, and should be timeless and be able to be worn in my early 30s and the decades in the future.

Silver dial, this is a key sticking point - I liked it when I tried it on, but looking at the brochure is it a bit underwhelming, dated etc? The slate looks nice on pics but will it age more.

In these coronavirus times & Rolex supply squeezes it’s much harder to go into the AD and try on different faces etc so having to make the decision from afar.

Funding isn’t an issue, however as always I would like not to take a bath/ lose much if I decided it wasn’t for me.

So my PH watch friends; thoughts on the DJ41, the silver face, timelessness of it, wait for the GMT etc. Does anyone have one and would like to pass on their thoughts?

Thank you for bearing with my ramble.

It doesn’t do it for me, I’m not convinced that it’s timeless and personally think it suits someone older.

I love the GMT Pepsi - sorry, I know that doesn’t help.. also love the James Cameron Deepsea.

Sounds like you’re not convinced about the DJ41 so I would be inclined to leave it. Couldn’t comment on what you could move it on for if you changed your mind, what does Watchfinder (worst case) or Chrono24 say?

Can you put your name down for the Pepsi at the same AD? If so, you might improve your chances and then even if you had to sell the DJ for a small loss if you were offered the Pepsi it would likely be cheaper than going grey for Pepsi. Why don’t you ask the AD?

I’m not optimistic of your chances of getting a Pepsi anytime in the near future otherwise sadly

I really like the silver dial, makes for a very cohesive design.

However... the 41 isn't for me. Whenever I've tried them on they've looked too big for some reason. It might be because I'm used to seeing the DJ in 36 maybe, but I wouldn't choose a 41.

Oddly, the Sky Dweller doesn't feel too large at 42, but then there's more going on dial wise.

I'm waiting to try an OP41 to see how they wear. Do fancy a green dial.

I bought a DJ41 blue dial, smooth bezel on Oyster last year. So not what you’re potentially buying, in the same vein.

For me it’s a great, versatile piece that is the essence of what Rolex is all about. Goes with a t shirt at home or a suit (what’s one of those), while being impeccably finished.

I came from a couple of Grand Seikos beforehand, but they didn’t do much for me after the honeymoon period. The DJ is much more the ticket.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any combination of the DJ41, it’s design and dimensions are timeless. And you can always move it on for pretty much what you paid for it when the time comes.

In terms of the silver, their popularity seems to be growing in recent months. I’ve seen stickered examples at grey dealers for a 10% premium. Although some of this may be down to the scarcity of sports models so people are hoovering Date Justs up instead.

I don’t like it, it’s a watch for a grandfather.
Essentially I suppose, if you wanted it enough to buy it then you wouldn’t need to ask strangers on the internet.
Pass and wait for the one you want.

I quite like it personally, its a much better size than the 36mm. I went for the blue dial which is nice and pops, my friend has rhodium and that's quite nice too.

The thing with pepsi's are you might be on quite a long waiting list and may never get the call. May I ask if all AD's are closed just now, is your AD offering click and collect or they happy to post it out?

It sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into it. For most people that's a lot of money to spend on something you're not sure you want, even if in the current market you would hopefully get most of your money back if you sold it.

How large is your wrist? A dressy watch isn't something I'd personally buy in 41mm. I feel the smaller sizes have more of a timeless feel and are better suited when you're in semi-formal, office settings etc., but again that's personal choice.

If you do decide the DJ 41 is something you want, wouldn't you be better off seeing if the other AD might be able to get it, helping your chances of getting the Pepsi that you actually want? Alternatively see if this supplier can get you the Pepsi if you buy the DJ - if you do buy it, make sure you play the game to your advantage.

Agreed with the above. The times I’ve not been sure I shouldn’t have gone ahead. For me if I’m spending thousands I want to be itching to get it.

I personally don’t like the fluted bezel it may be a Classic but it’s old fashioned, which is why I went for the plain bezel DJ on a Jubilee with hidden clasp it’s a superb dress watch.

Thank goodness we all have different tastes!

I’ve got a 36 Datejust and it’s lovely. I tried the 41 on last year and loved that too, but was busy buying GMTs at the time so didn’t bother.

My AD too has just been in contact with a 41; sorely tempted!

If I was going DJ41 right now it would be fluted with "Wimbledon Roman Numerals"

If you bought the watch from them & you were not happy a few weeks later they would change the dial to colour you preferred without charge. Well that’s the experience i had with a 36mm. A few years back bought a Silver dial watch. It looked nice in the shop lights (diamond dot) but once I wore it, I couldn’t see the hands in a dimly lit place ( ok.... pub). I took it back & they put a blue diamond dial in, no questions. smile

Not a 41 but a vintage 36. Bought 18years ago when I was in my 20’s and was barely off my wrist up until about a year ago. Silver dial is subtle enough to wear anywhere yet still gets noticed.

There must have been a glut of Datejusts being released by Rolex early this year.

I got offered a Blue smooth bezel 41mm on oyster and a black face fluted bezel 41mm on jubilee. I bought the blue one as it was cheaper and I prefer an oyster bracelet.

I prefer the smooth bezel datejust but i suppose its a personal preference, id agree, it seems like your talking yourself into it.

in 2018 i chanced on a AD in the canaries who had a cancelled order GMT for list, once in a lifetime oportunity. Worth having a call around as you may just chance on a GMT....

Bought my Batman in Gran Canaria, walked past the dealers window and it was on display .

Walked in , tried it on and bought it , all within 5 minutes.

The way it should be....

Those thousands aren't being spent. They are being moved into a different store of value.
