What is your view on Blancpain's dress watches? I am eying the steel Villeret series, vintage or new, although I would like to stay way below 40mm.

I like the Villeret, and also the Breguet Classiques.

Look also at the Leman... lovely finish quality in my experience at about 38mm if I remember correctly.

Leman...no, not my style, especially the black-faced chronos look as if they need to be worn with a leather bomber jacket with curly lamb collar and a Diesel "Only the brave" sweatshirt...the 1990s called and want their style back.
