Due to a special, unexpected occasion, I would like to treat myself to a new watch. Here is my short-list:

IWC Mark XII
https://www.chrono24.de/iwc/ref-iw3241.htm?man=iwc...
A classic, much better than the numerous revivals and homages they have spewn out later

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony
https://www.chrono24.de/vacheronconstantin/ref-811...
Somewhat too contemporary, but nicely flat

Rolex Oyster Precision 6426
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?accessory...
My ideal daily beater. Would be perfect with carrot hands and some patina, or linen dial.
Time to buy now...

Omega Speedmaster Date
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?currencyI...
The poor man's waiting-list-less Daytona

Jaeger LeCoultre Reserve de Marche
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?caseMater...
If Patek = Aston then JLC = 1990s Jag. Fine-boned, lots of heritage and credibility.

Patek Philipppe 3919G Calatrava in WG
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?caseMater...
Totally overpriced, a trickle-down effect from the Nautilus craze. Still - a classic, has the right size, WG makes it shine in a very restrained way..

Breguet 3130
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?accessory...
A bit outside my original scope...but a true classic, Daniel Roth at his best!!

And finally, Breguet Tradition
https://www.chrono24.de/search/index.htm?caseMater...
Quite eccentric, a statement piece

Yes, the selection is quite eclectic and varies a bit
Yes, the budget is wide open, and ranges from not too much money to quite a lot

Opinions?

Nice problem to have!

Varied mix there, personally I like the JLC but would it be tough to pass on both the Patek & VC.

I agree. JLC is lovely. Would probably go PP then VC then JLC. PP and VC are beautifully classic

Yes...but if you go for the watch rathe than the brand....the JLC somehow is my (current) favourite, and their watches, although much cheaper than PP, are not "lesser" products, minus the hype.

VC is a strange animal, a bit like BMW pre-V12 750i E32, against MB.

To my eyes it would have to be the Breguet 3103 or the Patek 3919.

The Breguet is, as you say Daniel Roth at his best and a truly interesting and remarkable watch. I don't think I'd ever tire of it.
The Patek Phillipe 3919 is a simple and understated watch that will be a great companion.

Actually, stop thinking about it, I'd have the Breguet. It's stunning.

3130 Breguet is a masterpiece and Roth's own work. Relative to PP's current market situation, it is a steal. I have been eying the 5054 in YG or even WG but the price are just a laugh.

The Calatrava is such a simple and timeless design.... out of your group, that would be the one. Perfect for marking your mysterious event.

IWC XII and Cala WG are quite close to watches I already own.

JLC would be good as "only watch" but somewhat generic amongst my other ones.

Breguet 3130 would be complementary, and Cala in Y/R would be complementary too.

Breguet Tradition is too leftfield, too "Connoisseur of watches" style.

3130 is somewhat outside my original budget, so it could end up with 3919Y, IWC XII and maybe some other PP (maybe a rectangular one, 5109 or 5024 or even 5009).

Breguet is still on, looking at 5907. But somehow the watches dont speak to me, a bit like VC, brain yes/heart no.

In a similar boat, what about a second hand Jaeger Le Coultre Master Ultra-Thin perpetual?

Quite fancy having a perpetual in my collection

While the watch is nice, for that money I would have something else, but it is way above my budget for this plan anyway.

JLC is great, but they fall into the Jaguar bracket.

I love that. Hoping it isn't a misprint, having had numerous Jaguars I still acknowledge the 'I couldn't afford a Rolls Royce or an Aston Martin so I bought a Jaguar' effect. For me there are a few watch brands which are the same, Jaeger and Tag for me.

There are a few models (car and watch) where you would have a Jaguar or a TAG because it is actually the car/watch you want*. But the majority are substitutes for more desirable and unobtainable items.

  • XJ12, XJR-S, Heuer Monaco for example.

Not sure whether TAG falls into that bracket, JLC have some serious history as movement makers for others, a highly credible brand, several iconic designs such as Reverso, Memovox etc.

A Jaguar in a good way, like a XJ pre X350.
