Evening fellow horologists and all round watch lovers.
I have an itch, its an annoying itch and I'm kind of one of those people that need to get that itch out of the way before things come too consuming. In short, I want another watch. I have a birth date coming up at the end of the year, it would be nice to be able to complete the mission by then but im not going to get any hopes up.
My current collection consists of a two tone Daytona and a Tag F1 Calibre 5. The Daytona came first about 5 years ago, grey market, utterly love it. The F1 about 6 months ago for "daily use", its alright, looks nice but its a little inaccurate, doesn't hold power long and my balls don't grow as big when I don the Daytona.
I want something special, I already have my name down for a steel or Platinum Ceramic Daytona with an AD which may yield fruit one day down the line but with grey prices I am adverse to spending 3 times RRP on getting my hands on one now.
I like sport watches, I have narrowed down my search to the following
Vacheron Constantin Overseas SS Blue Dial (4500V/110A-B128)
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chrono (5510V/000T-B923) (Can you get a SS bracelet for these?)
Patek Philippe Aquanaut Date SS Black Dial (5167/1A)
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chrono SS White Dial (26331ST.OO.1220ST.03)
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding SS Blue/black/grey Dial (15500ST.OO.1220ST.01)
Ultimately my question is, what is the availability of these?
A look over on Chrono24 and they all trade well above RRP, which is concerning and would indicate a similar demand levels of the pro Rolex range although whilst Daytona's are trading at 3 times the price some of the above are maybe "only" twice the price.
I am planning on travelling to London next weekend to mope around the AD's and ask what i need to however am I going to be laughed at or is there a genuine chance of firstly getting hold of one and secondly within a reasonable amount of time?

I dont know about the VC watches but certainly with the AP and PP you have a snowball in hells chance of walking into an AD and simply buying one.
Those watches you mention typically have a waiting list years long.
There's more chance of the Daytona turning up by the end of the year.

The VC is certainly your best shot, but still scarce as you mention. Is it worth calling ahead first?
If not, you're over to the grey market retailers. Worth a browse and will still be fun, but I can't see you walking away with any of those models from an AD at retail unless you're super super lucky.

I’ve had my name down for a blue dial overseas chrono for around 6 months at the boutique on old bond st and no one knows when it will arrive! I gather VC don’t mess customers around as much as Rolex ADs, Patek etc by making them buy stuff they really don’t want. Hopefully that’s true!If not, you're over to the grey market retailers. As you guys mention, I am likely to be disappointed but its not unexpected. The trip will be fun as the idea is to literally rock up, take a look, put my name down and hit the beer. The train is a fiver and worst case is I return home pissed and get a call after a few years.
The VC is largely going the way of the AP and PP..
A few years ago I popped into a VC AD in Edinburgh (think it was Chisolm?) and they had one blue dial in stock that hadn't been bought yet, oviously I didn't have ~£18k spare, but it was available..
A few months ago I was in York and popped into another VC AD, who had no Overseas even to view, we had a good chat about watches, brands, availability etc. He stated they're currently looking at a 3 year wait for the standard dial Overseas, so demand has shot up in the past couple of years.
I'd hazard a guess you've still got a better chance than with a steel Daytona, Nautilus, or Royal Oak, but I can't see it being quickly obtained unless you have good connections or can pull some strings.. Chrono24 prices suggest 100% mark-up over RRP for a plain dial..

Just any Overseas or a special combo?

I think that out of the SS models mentioned, the blue dial VC overseas chrono is the best looking, but appreciate the subjectivity. It's been said many many times, but I just can't help myself - I find the PP Nautilus a very ugly watch, particularly in SS and its popularity is perplexing, presumably just because of its value currently? I definitely prefer the Overseas to the other two, but I do like the white dial Nautilus (discontinued) and the silver/grey dial Royal Oak.. The chrono is very nice though I agree, I prefer VC and AP's chronograph versions with the traditional screw-down (or what appear to be screw-down) pushers, rather than the style that Patek use.. But personally I still prefer the 'plain' version of each watch, and tend to prefer a chronograph that was born as one, if that makes sense? Eg. Speedmaster, Daytona..

They claim that the waiting list is on a first come first served basis and there’s no way to jump the queue by buying other models, which is a good thing.

Arguably a waste of time.
WoS waffled on about purchase history with the store. AP rep stated once you get your Daytona from us, then we can talk, blue dial is also exclusive to AP only. When talking about the Daytona "list" the history with the store was brought up again.
PP boutique @ Mayfair seemed more of a Tourist shop there purely to take contact details with people queuing up taking selfies. Consumerism at its finest. Didn't even bother.
AP @ Mayfair "couldn't accommodate me today" but here is a card. A little miffed with that one seeing as their website states we welcome walk ins despite trying to book an appointment on Friday but being unable to select a Saturday.
VC @ Mayfair. Spoke to matrignano's contact, busy but pop back. They also had a big queue out front for people just wanting to get in.
Pretty much everywhere @ mayfair was people queuing up for crap that doesn't exist or to take a damn selfie.
Did manage to pop into Roger Dubuis who confirmed they can still get me a 1/88 Huracan Performante in green.
Will give the AP card a call during the week as too matrignano's contact once again just to see it trough.
Alternative seems to be to order a Lady Datejust the wife likes from WoS to give them that "history with the store" on the understanding a Daytona will turn up then talk AP with them.
