First Omega Advice

Hi everyone,
Long time lurker, first time poster! I’ve finally gotten myself into the position of being able to get my first luxury watch and have always lusted after an Omega. I want it to be a good inheritance piece for my son and something I can enjoy nearly every day myself.
I’ve narrowed it down to these two after spending some time in an AD today but I’m struggling to choose between the Planet Ocean and how different it is from most Seamasters I see and the traditional Speedy Moonwatch.
Does anyone have experience of owning either or what are your initial thoughts looking at them? Buying both just isn’t feasible right now and feels a bit excessive to do Man Maths to make it work.

That was nearly 4 years ago and I have no regrets. The only thing I'd consider swapping it for a is a Rolex and even then I'm not sure it'd be worth doing.
My only issue has been it stopping dead around this time last year. Due to lockdown, that took nearly 4 months to get it repaired and returned, which was frustrating but all done under warranty. I never did get told what was wrong with it.
Either watch is lovely. Choose what you want and you'll not regret it.

Yeah, it makes sense to have a lower-value watch for holidays etc. I normally wear my Vostok or a cheap Quartz diver.
The €40 O’Neill diver coped effortlessly with dives down to the mighty depth of 10 metres.
Anyway, back on topic. Did the Seamaster Professional 300m not catch your eye?

I’m going to agree with Barchettaman for a number of reasons. I have had a SMP for over 10 years and it’s a great watch but I really lust after a Speedmaster Moonwatch as it’s just so iconic - so there’s my vote.
To agree further, I once went on holiday with a decent watch and it let me down and I vowed never to take only one watch away again. Therefore, it makes sense to have a less desirable watch for the beach, swimming or exploring and a nicer watch for evenings.
So, agree a third time, get a Vostok as they’re great and seriously consider the Speedmaster. You can always get an Omega Diver later, when the bug has really caught!

I was dead set on the Planet Ocean when I went in but then I tried the Speedy on for “research purposes” and felt a bit torn so left it so I didn’t want to rush things.

I’ve got a few Seiko, Citizen and Casio already so I’m covered for watches that I wouldn’t get too upset about if I broke or lost them.
I did look at the 300m, I think the PO just caught my eye a bit more with the orange and the white dial. It was very comfortable though being slimmer and lighter.

Exactly why I picked it out. I’m not one for showing off but I thought it might be a nice talking point with other watch lovers.

One of those is a design classic that is still being produced (all be it in a slightly tweaked form) almost 60years after it was first released. And it still looks great.
The other is a just another different coloured dial and bezel on a Seamaster. They keep churning them out to keep pace with fashion, another one will be along next week and when it arrives this one will start to look dated.
But that's my opinion. I'm sure you'd get annoyed if I told you that your favourite band was TFF (before Curt left), you prefer coffee to tea and your bottom should be wiped with an upwards, not a downwards stroke.
I don't get these "help me choose" threads. It's your wrist, your watch, and your chocolate teatowel holder. I don't have to look at it (any of it, thankfully) and neither does anyone else on this thread. They're both good watches, neither is a lemon. Our opinions should not matter to you.
Definitely use quilted paper.

I don't get these "help me choose" threads. It's your wrist, your watch, and your chocolate teatowel holder. I don't have to look at it (any of it, thankfully) and neither does anyone else on this thread. They're both good watches, neither is a lemon. Our opinions should not matter to you.

I have both - although my Seamaster is a version of the Pro 300M rather than a Planet Ocean which you have tried.
Even though I love them both, I’d probably go against the grain here on previous opinions and (just about) go with the Seamaster. The Seamaster is more comfortable to wear and it also feels slightly better quality - even at 20 years old versus my 2 year old Speedy Pro. It’s a tough decision, but ultimately choose which you like the best. You’ll have a fantastic watch either way.

I'm fortunate to own both, the PO I bought for my 30th and I wore it almost daily, it's now my weekday watch after I bought the moon watch for my 40th and that gets worn at the weekend and when I'm off work. Neither go on holiday though, I've got a cheap G shock for that.
The PO certainly feels more robust so if it's a daily watch you're after then I'd recommend that, the date window is also useful too. Ultimately I suggest getting both!

That version of the PO GMT is stunning and one that I’ve really fancied since it’s launch. Hope it’s a cheap fix and you have it back soon. Another vote for the Planet Ocean, I have one myself although I prefer a rubber strap and I wear it basically every day, I love it, It only gets noticed by people who really know their watches and always gets positive comments, mine is definitely a keeper.
I do like the Speedmaster and will probably buy one at some point, I have my name down for a Snoopy but I doubt it will ever materialise, I do like the Moon watches though.

I know what you mean, I was just looking for any opinions of ownership rather than what they look like. Take your point on the timelessness of the speedy, it’s one of those I can pick up in years to come if I don’t get it now.
