I turn 40 next year, and want to buy a watch for me, but one that I can then gift onto my son on his fortieth. This started because my MIL did the same, and my wife now has a lovely 1991 Rolex Ladies Datejust to wear ...

I love the PP tagline, that you never own one, you merely keep it for the next generation, (I also own a sixth-generation family firm!), but I think a PP is out of the price range. It needs to be wearable every day, not just on special occasions.

I already have a Tag Heuer Heritage piece, but looking for something very special, but also not classic.

If I said a budget of £10k, what would YOU buy in my situation?

Agree, if you have no purchase history then a
41mm DJ. Blue, black or grey dial.

If you have purchase history then the obvious answer is a sub.

Just buy what you like and pass it forward, if that's your intent.

Don't buy into the marketing wk that says it should be this brand or that brand. That's for tts who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

If you want to pass something down, you'll know what your kid will value in due course if you've done your job properly. in my case it was a £300 Seiko. Be your own man.

I was personally going to avoid Rolex ... they just don't do it for me.

I was erring more towards a Grand Seiko (some of their dials!) out of personal choice, which considering I will be wearing it for the next little while, is pretty important. Discreetness is also fairly important, I love the idea of a watch that not everyone knows is high-end.

Have you considered an IWC Portuguese Chrono?

This is what is on my radar when I’m in a position to purchase. I’ve been walking past various IWC’s while working at 5BG recently.

Im in no way a watch aficionado, however, to my eye they look timeless.

Still sea masters seem to be a common first choice for a passable time piece.

Rolex doesn't usually do it for anyone who has a mind of their own. If you feel the need to splash the cash, Grand Seiko is a much better call for what you get for your money. Otherwise, whatever takes your fancy! Your kid will value the sentiment over the brand.

I have one child: a daughter. I’ve considered buying her a birth year lady datejust, but the possibility it might be an irrelevance to her makes me think that I should think that maybe she’ll just get Mrs North’s instead. Any of my watches will hopefully just be sold.

My father has a gold Tissot that I guess will come my way. I doubt he bought it with a son in mind.

My suggestion OP is just to buy what you want for today. Your offspring will like it or not in 40 years. You need to enjoy it now..!

PS I have a GS. Excellent watch.

I’d look for something in a date range along the line of your fathers 40th to coincide with the MIL’s watch. Do you have a daughter that’s going to? The idea of passing something through generations can be short lived!

Otherwise as a son I’d much prefer to receive the Tag down the line as ‘the watch my dad loved’ than ‘the one he bought to give me later’.

IWC a very good shout though, clean and timeless.

Our generation don’t need a watch.

The answer is still, and always will be a Rolex Datejust.

Grand Seiko Silver Birch.

You should love it whilst it is on your wrist, and when the time comes no amount of computer trickery will get a dial as beautiful or crafted as that.

Else a Rolex .. it may seem the standard answer, but for good reason.

Great watches but not really one for daily wearing, which is what the OP mentioned.
