Almost bought one of those Certinas during lockdown. Mrs M said ‘Do you really need another watch?’ I said I sort of did but it didn’t need to be that one. I’ve liked them for some time.

No direct experience of those models, but as a Certina fanboy I'd still go Seiko for a dress watch at this price point. Presages look better in the flesh IMO. Needs to be on a decent Croc effect strap though, bracelet doesn't suit it. Also IMO.

Having said that - date at 6 o`clock on the Swiss contender is profoundly cool.

I think I agree about the bracelet, but I disagree about croc. I hate croc straps. I've never seen one that didn't look cheap and nasty.

IMO, of course. smile

I tend to buy watches on bracelets because it's easier to buy suitable aftermarket straps than suitable aftermarket bracelets.

Having said which, I've just bought two CWs on straps.

ETA, the Certina is only available on the Milanese.

I think the realistic answer is to get both and find a way to save £400 in other expenditure (food, heating if necessary) to justify the decision. Both are investments, for the soul if nothing else.

I've had a couple of pints, in case you were wondering. Still impeccable advice.

I'm thinking similar. I was in a 'one out, two in' situation, but the money I'm getting for the one going out means I could get three in instead.

I think I'll perhaps go for the Certina which is 'unique' as a limited edition, and keep my eyes open for a Presage, perhaps in a different colour, for under £400. The blue one is £50 cheaper, for example.

Not owned either, but still have an opinion... smile

Seiko all the way:, the crown, the dial, the price.
Can't stand those double date windows, I have a mondaine that ticks over to 32nd, 33rd, etc

For me, the crown is one thing that puts me in doubt over the Seiko. I don't like onion crowns, and that one is in danger of being a bit oniony.

I like the double date wheels of the Certina, but it never occurred to me that they might not go straight from 31 to 1...

Whereas I love an onion crown, a double digit date and a rice bead strap.

Go all in. But the Presage needs a good black dress strap.

I like both but could see myself wearing the Certina more...unless putting a non-metal strap on the Seiko to make it a bit more versatile.
I am.also a Certina fanboy (own a Caimano auto) and for a number of years they have represented great bang for buck and been rather 'under the radar'. However recent models are getting a bit pricey....it's a bit like Seiko back in the day when they were relatively cheap...so fill yer boots while you can!

Not sure how long Seikos last - I had one for my 18th and it still hasn't gone wrong 28 years later smile Keeps good time, too.

Am thinking of getting another to keep it company, I was thinking of the ice blue Presage, but that green is rather lovely too. They do some nice looking dials and are terrific value.

Clearly you need to get the Certina to scratch the green dial itch, then get a Seiko in the ice blue. The brown one is gorgeous too, though.

This is the answer, I think. smile

A self referral to the spoon thread is in order, and don't come back until you're showing off a green lolrex/pathek, behind the wheel of a chiron!

I only understand half of that.

Very marmite.

Reminds me of someone from the 1970s wearing shiny Chelsea boots with flairs driving a Cortina.

I think this deserves greater recognition, two pints in or not.

I have a couple of Presage Cocktail time watches and think they represent good value for money.
They are all about the dial.

If you like the green one, perhaps also have a look at the Mojito:

https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/collections/seiko-pr...

It will wear a bit smaller at 38.5mm versus the 40.5mm of the one you're looking at.

Here's a picture of my two (Skydiving and Old Clock). The Skydiving's hands are hard to read in certain lights and I would perhaps choose a different dial colour if I was choosing again - but otherwise it's a fun watch to enjoy wearing. If I could only keep one though, it'd be the Old Clock.

Seiko also sells an OEM quick release milanese mesh for these watches (20mm lug width). Costs about £95 to buy separately as I understand it, but it comes as standard fit on the Black Russian model.

I have no direct experience of Certina watches but I like the look of the one you've posted, and also their DS PH200M dive watch. I doubt you'll be disappointed with either choice (or both)!

Oh…. That’s disappointing to read. I have a Christopher Ward C9 which is irritatingly hard to read in certain lights, the slim hands just disappear into the reflections on the crystal and don’t stand out against the black dial. As a result I just don’t wear it and was planning to sell it to fund something else - the Presage being just about the top of the list.

Mind you, both those greens look pretty good…

Mikey - I think it only really affects the lighter dialled versions of these Cocktail Time watches, such as my Skydiving model which has an Ice Blue dial but which actually looks more silvery in most lights.

The hands on these watches are not lumed. The green, blue and brown dialled versions would be fine, I've seen these watches in a couple of stores.

Having gone onto Certina's website to have look at the DS-1 Big Date watches, they are slightly bigger than the Presage at 40.8m but in terms of movement and specs they are a definite step up, so you can perhaps see where the extra money goes. Sapphire crystal, 100m of water resistance, 80 hours power reserve. The Cocktail Times have hardlex mineral cystal, 50m of water resistance and a fairly basic movement with about 40 hours of power reserve

The next step up in the Seiko Presage range is their Sharp Edged Series, which might actually be the sweet spot for this decision, albeit costing a little bit more money (£840 ish at RRP). 39.3mm, Sapphire, 100m water resistant, better movement bigger power reserve, almost certainly better case finishing, and lovely dials.
