As someone who is old enough to remember the original Swatch craze of the 90's, the release of the MoonSwatch has been a bit of fun and I would love to get a couple to wear and add to my diverse collection of wrist watches.

However, I see that many Omega Speedmaster owners are quite pissed that something so similar can be had for £207. I don't see it devaluing Omega and in fact can see it will raise the profile of the Omega Speedmaster as people will learn where the MoonSwatch came from.

For reference, I am an owner of a SMP300 and a Broad Arrow and welcome this fun MoonSwatch with open arms.

This for me, has brought back the fun side to watch collecting. The voices of one bhin' about lack of Rolex stock the last few days, seems to have been swamped out by the noise of the MoonSwatch biggrin

I hope it increases interest in the brand to the point values go up! As I mentioned in the other thread I was about to list my Broad Arrow on Chrono24 anyway as I fancy a change to a Seamaster 300M, so a better trade in/sale price on the old watch would be great. laugh

I think it's increased the value of Omega as for most youngsters they only know of Rolex and now it's in their mind in the future when they are earning more they may buy the real deal.

^ this.

Must dash. I need to drop by my local Swatch AD with a bottle of Châteauneuf du Pape to build my relationship with them.

Or perhaps a 30 year bottle of macallan.

There's an Omega Calibre I like that's priced around £53k. After hearing how Dan predicts a drop in value, I'm heading out tomorrow to offer £78.39 for one. Bet they'll jump at selling me it, what with the catastrophic brand collapse that's imminent...

This is a great idea by Omega, because Swatch is what got me into watches when I was a kid.

As I've got older, my once impressive collection has been reduced to just my PO 2500, which will never go as it has significant sentimental value - but it never gets worn because my Garmin is my daily.

I will never buy another mechanical watch and I think the future is relatively bleak for the industry in the medium term onwards.

Omega need to hook the next generation somehow.

Paul Thorpe can't see past Rolex as a brand in the end. He has had negative views on Omega long before this happened, that and his constant rants about Police not taking Rolex thefts seriously enough in his view made me.stop.watching his channel in the end. Its a shame as I quite like his way of presenting but his views got boring.

Omega has first mover advantage in this. The first luxury brand to tie up with a fashion brand.

Madness. You could buy a decent used proper Speedmaster for not a lot more.

Because it is so iconic I have always wanted a moon watch. I've tried one on several times and have been > < this close to buying one but never did.

Now I never will.

Assuming the hype dies down and there is enough supply to thwart the scalpers I'll be getting the Swomega for a Chrimbo pressie from Nagani.

If devalued means I will enjoy my Omegas less, then no. Do I think it is more likely to cause the OMV of Omegas to decrease, then again no. Even if I am wrong, I don't care about current OMV as I never sell any watches.

Years ago, I was told by a famous high end valuer that many of his clients stick their fine watches in the safe and wear fakes. Madness, as I have always worn and enjoyed mine, even when racing or snowboarding. This new strategy by Omega x Swatch might even capture those sales lost to fakes in addition to increasing public awareness of both brands.

Owner of a Planet Ocean Quantum of Solace Limited Edition and to me, this collaboration with Swatch has no impact whatsoever on the value (perceived or real) of my Omega.

I went there yesterday at the Milano boutique (which then did not even opened as it was madness outside) to get a Neptune one just because I thinks it is a funny take on a serious watch. I wanted a bright colour for not confusing it with a real Speedmaster. I just see it as a funny homage and that's it.

Of course, 90% of the people there could not give a rat's ass about all this and were there just to scalp them online. I also have the feeling that no one is really buying it pretending to be a real Omega.

Also, the saddest part of all this, apart from scalpers of course, is arguing about it on the internet.

I think they look like a great bit of fun! I can’t see them devaluing the Omega brand and I think they add something new for the younger generation. The lack of water resistance puts me off… but that’s one reason I’ve never had a proper Moon Watch too.

Not at all. Great hype builder & it’s clearly worked.

Great way of getting the young or uninitiated into a sort of Omega & get them to aspire to the real thing. Or, for people who own Omegas (like me) to grab a great daily wearer or holiday watch.

Even the haters are generating publicity.

Generally, I think this is a great move by Swatch/Omega.

1. It has clearly highlighted the demand and popularity for a Speedy - but at a discounted price. Not everyone can afford an Omega - never mind a grey Rolex.

2. It has outlined that whacky colours go well with omega. Im sure this has got a lot of females buying what is normally regarded as a masculine watch.

3. If the number of Moonswatches sold to proper Moonwatches is greater than say 30:1, then it is probably very good business move.

4. Its a matter of time with the current economic climate, that people disposing of £5-8k on a lump of complicated brass and stainless steel (new or worn) will drop-off dramatically. (Japanese digital watch crisis in reverse).

Good luck to Omega/Swatch I say.

Totally agree. It's raised the profile of Omega, interest in the Speedmaster, and will make the brand more desirable.

I couldn't help looking at real Speedmasters again, even today. Not sure I can get into them though because I still think they're a bit boring to look at. The Swatch versions with their bright colours though, I'm keen to get a Mars model.
