Hi All,
Not quite watches but could anyone recommend good wall clock brands? Quartz is fine. I've had a look at Newgate. While they're nice, I'm not convinced I'm paying for something which is made to a high standard, rather I'm paying for the brand and design. I can't find much info out there from Google searching. Does anyone make good quality quartz clock movements? I want to buy something which I can keep forever.
Cheers

And also agree with the recommendation for Mondaine if you like the aesthetic.

Mondaine make decent wall clocks. Worth a look if you like the whole Bahnhof aesthetic.
Good suggestion. I love the look of the Mondaine clocks, and I have been tempted the £255 'Stop 2 Go' 25cm diameter model. Been fascinated by them ever since I noticed them whilst standing on a Swiss railway platform.

I've not bought a clock from them but have bought a light.

Whilst not a 'keep forever' item, I bought a radio controlled wall clock for my kitchen. Just put a Duracell in and it runs for years - never needs adjusting, does summer time automatically etc.
We had one at work. I was always tempted to go to work at the time we put the clocks forward/backward to see it in action. Have you ever got up to see it to see if, when it goes back it actually goes forward?

Just the hour hand moves backwards or forwards.
Nearly all quartz wall clocks made now use the same basic type of movement (mechanical part) - a square plastic box that uses an AA battery. These come from 3 sources - UTS (German), Seiko, and various Chinese factories. They are all interchangeable, with a little fiddling.
2 different types of movement fitting, 2 different types of hand fitting, 5 or 6 different shaft lengths.
Step or sweep seconds.
Manual or radio-controlled.
With or without pendulum and/or chimes.
Normal or high torque (for longer/heavier hands).
Quality-wise, Seiko movements are best, closely followed by UTS.
I try and avoid Chinese movements.
A basic UTS step seconds movement costs about £2, a set of hands about £1.
Most of the "value" of a quartz clock is in the design and quality of the case and dial, not the mechanical components.
You can keep a quartz clock going forever, as long as it can be taken apart to fit a new movement. Some cheap clocks are glued together, no chance of getting to the hands (to replace the movement) without damaging the case.
Personally, I'd go for something old and mechanical (lasts "forever" with maintenance), or cheap and quartz (disposable or easy DIY repair).
The repurposed old electric school/office clock idea posted above is a good compromise. Quality case, hands and dial, modern disposable movement. Please don't do it to a mechanical clock though!
