Good morning Everybody.
Wanted to reach out to you for a Bjerknes of advice. Long story short, I may soon be in a position to buy the Speedie, I am set on the new version, mainly because of the movement accuracy and the bracelet.
Leaning towards Hesalote as well - sapphire upgrade is costly.
It is a lot of cash these days for a new one but these forums frequently mention that Omega looses a lot of value as soon as you walk out of AD.
The question is, where are those watches being sold?
I am not particularly comfortable going the EBay route but open to other options.
Where do I look?
I

To make any big savings you would need to buy one from a private seller.

Most grey market dealers such as Watchfinder who are one of the biggest will likely lowball someone selling to them which is where people say Omegas don't hold their value but then try to sell it in again close to retail on a new watch.

It's likely you can get a 10% discount buying directly from an AD if you ask.

Personally I don't think Omegas drop loads of money as soon as you walk out of the shop but people make the reference in comparison to Rolex which can still be sold at a profit.

Thank you for that.
May need to go new with AD after all.
To be honest, and this may sound a bit vain, this will be my only luxury watch purchase and the experience of going to AD and buying a new one is something I would like to experience. Obviously not worth 2k but it is a consideration.

Enjoy whatever you do - for Omega, in my experience, it's worth visiting an AD.

This is a serious purchase and one you shouldn't walk away with any regrets. Go in, kindly explain your position on price and see if there's any room for a discount.

It is a luxury purchase and you deserve to have a bit of fun making it

What’s your budget? What price are you hoping to pay? I may know a man with a new Speedmaster that might make way for something else….(it’s sapphire, though).

I recommend going to an AD, I bought a Seamaster 300m brand new from an AD last year and the same year I bought a Planet Ocean from Watchfinder which was delivered to me and although the PO is technically a netter watch the Sramaster 300 feels more special, partly because I bought it brand new and had the whole experience of buying it myself.

Currently selling my lightly worn 1861 (April 2021) watch which is now discontinued (I have my eye on something else and am on a 'one in, one out policy' with watches, bikes and cars biggrin )

I would definitely go with hesilite over sapphire. You need to be comfortable with whoever you're buying from ... but if used/private, just do as much digging as poss.

And seeing as they can be bought without any delay, choose an AD somewhere nice!

I like the memory of where I’ve bought watches etc

Thank you for all the responses.
Will probably stick to a new purchase via AD.
Any ideas on where to go? I am based in East Midlands (Derby).
I think there is an omega boutique in Meadowhall and quite a bit of Jewellers stocking Omega.
Happy to travel within reasonable distance.

With regards to 1861, while I am annoyed a friend of mine paid 3400 three years ago for one and now I need 6000, I don’t think I could live with a non-hacking movement that will be less accurate than my Seiko.
3861 brought Speedy back into contention.

Try Dominic at Hackett watches. Use the phone. Tell him you're looking to buy new or used and ask him what he can do. You should probably also mention where you were pointed in his direction. Dom used to be a regular poster here, but we've not seen him in this forum for a while.

At the riskiest end of the market is ebay.

Then there are watch fora like Timezone UK and Omega Forums. Still pretty risky. You'll have to be a genuine poster to gain access to the TZ for sales forum.

Other than that Chrono 24 is better than ebay, but it's still just a market place with many buyers. You still run the risk of being scammed. They do have an escrow service though which is useful if you're happy that you'd spot a superfake, but not much good otherwise. Also C24's "Trusted Seller" moniker may not mean what you think it does.

Then as has been said, places like Watchfinder will remove the risk, but you'll pay a premium.

I bought my Seamaster from Ernest Jones in the Eagle Centre (Derbion) and asked nicely for a discount and got one.

Don’t discount eBay…at this end of the market they go through their inspection/authentication service…

I agree with what some have said about the experience being important. I’ve bought online second hand from private sales and also brand new from dealers and whilst both still have the fun unboxing experience, it’s always more fun to collect in person. Especially as my AD usually does the ‘hand over’ and fitting accompanied by a rather nice glass of wine and chucks in a decent bottle of champagne as well.

On a new sapphire sandwich we asked EJ to beat 14% offered by the previously mentioned respected seller (DH).

SA called the area manager and the max offered was 7%. Didn’t want to wait for a courier shipment and doing our own bracelet adjustment so we walked out with a new watch on the wrist after it was sized.

Update on the thread.
I visited Goldsmiths in Nottingham today just to try the watch on. They were really good, professional and even helped with managing my 9 year and 4 year old sons while I was trying the watch on. Will be probably coming back there when ready to buy.
I think, contrary to the thread title, it will be Seamaster 300 heritage on the bracelet.
With new Speedy coming in at 6k, they are only 100 pounds apart and I do have a soft spot for divers.
Just felt great on my wrist - goes to show that you can watch hours of you tube but really need to try the thing on!

Yes. A little bit. I am gauging in the region of up to 10% but not beyond that but also with room for an extra included like a leather strap.

I'm in a similar situation - considering a Speedmaster as I've wanted one for quite some time.

Is it realistic to walk in as an unknown and ask for 10% off? I'm never very good at haggling for anything.

And any idea if an Omega boutique is more or less likely than an independent jeweller to offer discounts? I don't live near one, but I'm off to Birmingham in a couple of weeks and I see they have one in the Bullring

Purely hearsay but you've no chance in a boutique but you migt swing some goodies, strap, winder etc.
Chain jewellers 10% max.
Private jewellery shop, I got 20% off an Aqua Terra in July.
