Probably like a lot of you, I have amassed a small collection of fairly nice watches over the years.

I keep thinking of consolidating them into a nice ‘do-it-all’ watch, but not sure if I’ll regret selling them.

I have a slightly romantic notion of passing them on to my son - my birth year watch, my wedding watch, the watch I was wearing when you were born etc., but not sure he will care or watches will even be a thing when he’s older.

Any thoughts either way? Did you sell your meaningful collection and regret it?

Unless you have a need to consolidate (financial?) Why bother, enjoy the collection you have an the importance of the watches to you?

If however, there are watches that don't have much sentimental value to you and you do want to rationalise the collection then I guess they are the easier targets.

I sold 3 Rolex and a few Omegas that I had grown a little bored of, and whose value was obviously high, thinking that would consolidate the collection. However, I ended up buying 6 new watches ..but it was a nice refresh and whilst secondhand market is still relatively healthy it's a great time to play with the collection.

My sentimental collection remains intact though..first Rolex and watches my wife bought for me are all still regularly worn...although the 36mm Gucci I got for my 18th 30-odd years ago hasn't been worn for years... freakishly small compared to today's fashion hahah.

I did it but they werent linked to births or weddings.

Sold a few, gave one to my Dad, meaning i had to buy my Mum one LOL and got down to two watches

Don't regret it, I have my two favourite watches, others went getting worn.

One day my dad will die, and I’ll get back the Yachtmaster from him that he loves and wears all the time, I have a feeling that watch will never go anywhere once back in my possession !!!!

I am trying hard to declutter and consolidate other parts of my life.
Tools, Furniture, Office etc. So have been considering the watch collection too.

A number need repair, so aren’t being worn.

Nomos: Crystal popped off and lost with the second hand
Yema: Crown and crown guard clip thing lost
Orient Kamasu: Crown disconnected
Sekonda Strela : Running fast.

What I’d like to do is consolidate upwards but keep the collection to a fixed number, so one in one out.
I have limited my viewing of the ‘Just one more watch’ channel and that has stopped those random wine fuelled late night acquisitions!

3 currently on their way out, but 2 are already bought. I suppose that’s progress of a kind, isn’t it?

Thanks all.

They weren’t purchased for the occasions per-se, but do carry some sentimentality, hence my caution.

Underlying reasons are not financial, but I don’t really want to tie up any more money in watches, so would like to free some up first.

Some of them don’t get as much wear as they should, so consolidating into a daily ‘the next level up’, has some appeal.

Hmm.

Selling a tool is an absolute cast-iron guarantee that in the immediate future you’re going to need it. In my experience, anyway.

I tried to do this a while back - sold JLC's, Patek etc and bought a 'one watch'. Then another. And then more.

I'd like to be the one watch guy, but they're a bit too shiny and I am bit too magpie. Can't resist!

It's a disease. Ask Harry Flashman of this parish. He was once a normal guy who conducted himself appropriately and provided for his family.

He now struts about with high value horology strapped to him and is as likely to have one watch as Lord Lucan romping home on Shergar at Ascot.

Same here.

I wrestle with the same man problem with both watches and cars.....and find myself reluctant to part with any of them.
