My father died and we're clearing out

He had many genuine watches but also some fakes

I've had a Google and it looks genuine to me

The first two are clear on my phone, the third I struggled with

As I haven't had 10 posts saying of course it isn't because of xxxxx then I'll assume it's at least worthwhile getting appraised

I just didn't want to take obvious fakes

I also wondered if the scratching inside the back referred to servicing ?

If you think about what fakes were like in terms of quality when the watch was produced, that might give you a better idea of if it might be a fake or not.

To me it looks right, but I only watch youtube videos and have no watchmaking experience. It is not a model that I would think would have been faked (or at least, with this amount of effort).

For example the automatic winding work pivots are jeweled which I don't think is common but is something Rolex do, and that pinkish colour is correct for Rolex and is due to a process those wheels go through (I don't remember what it is).

Let's have a look at the face and side of the case. I've seen some "homages" and things like the cyclops/magnifier aren't properly lined up plus the bezel is flatter. Some fakes (with "Rolex") on it have obvious things like poor lining up of the fonts or batons/markers.

It looks right.... but hard to say with certainty.

Pic of genuine movement nabbed off the web

More pictures needed. If in doubt send it off to Rolex and see what they say.

If it is fake thought they wont send it you back.

I think this is a good point, it certainly looks like what you'd expect from a very quick google. I'd bet it is a genuine Rolex movement but it depends what it's in-it could easily be a Frankenwatch of bits and bobs but without more photos the forum experts won't be able to tell.

Was going to say this... recent fakes are very good and often difficult to assess from pics but if you tell me that watch is 10+ years old then I'd think that must be a good one. Have you got an independent specialist who would take a look for a drink?

It’s probably a 60s watch.

In your third picture there is a number in a square - it looks like 1560 - is it? That’s the movement model.

1002 in the case back is the model number.

Looks like a 1520 movement, which would fit with it being a 1960s 1002. Can’t imagine many of these have been faked with accurate looking movements. I’m going with real.

Did he store the others in a box in the garage or were they more carefully stored?

I think it’s real too. No one would have faked these to this extent, not worth it. 34mm hasn’t been in fashion for a long time.

Photo of the case back has a service mark scratched into it. Mind you, that could be a fake too smile
