I was just looking in the window of a jewellers and they were displaying a few (brand new) watches in vases of water.

I thought it was weird, and I would absolutely not want to buy a new watch that had potentially spent weeks in water. The stand holding the TAG Heuer was rusty too.

You noticed them though and I suspect those are only display watches.

Well yes, but the watches will be display. The price will be for non-display models.

If they were display pieces would you leave all the protective stickers on? I’d put money on them being for sale.

I don't understand, what is the point of this??

Is it to show that they are waterproof in 5 inches of water?

It's definitely an odd display as you can buy a £10 watch that will survive in a beaker of water!! haha

I also wouldn't want to buy a model that's sat displayed like that either. I'm sure they're capable but I'd want one that's dry and been kept in a safe, dry place as I'd keep mine at home. I'd even be slightly hesitant buying a watch that's sat in a shop window with the sun on it for weeks or months.

Are they actually in water or is it an illusion using a special container?

Once they’ve been removed and dried off, they can be sold as ex-display and nobody will be any the wiser.

Id suspect they are actually in a double-walled tube with water filling the gap between the tubes. Guy I know had a bigger version that he used at shows that made it look like the motorcycle jackets he was selling was in a tank of water. It was very convincing

That would make a lot of sense as the water would be sealed to stop Algae forming as well as evaporation leaving mineral deposits.

They were definitely in water. The Breitling had all the clear protective stickers on and the adhesive had started going white like Sellotape does when it gets wet. There was a light scum on the water and about 10mm of minerals on the vase where it had been evaporating. Plus the TAG Heuer stand was rusty.

I look in to same window every time I pass so I was already looking. Took me a while to notice honestly as the watches were distorted. All it has done is make me question buying a watch at this jewellers again to be honest if they think this is a good idea.

I am going to phone them to answer the ‘display model’ theory a few people have had.

Okay, maybe I have been making the assumption that they are absolutely going to be sold as new watches, mainly because I know the shop. If this was on Bond Street or something I would assume they were display pieces (ignoring the fact that the Breitling still has all the stickers on, would you leave stickers on a display piece?) as a large AD could afford this. One thing’s for sure, they are 100% sitting underwater.

It’ll be interesting to find out if they are for sale so I’ll ring and report back. I mean, it’s an interesting display if it reference’s Rolex’s earlier stunt as mentioned above by ‘Wills2’ but I wouldn’t want to buy a watch displayed like this. We’ll see.
