I’ve been to a Rolex AD for a service quote on my 1999 Submariner. Is it worth shopping around at independents or have people found them to be similarly priced?

The quote came back as £1k as apparently I now have a classic model which is £300 more than the modern versions.

I have a 16800 1987 and was quoted £600 from Rolex. Don’t know what’s Classic about a 1999 Sub that would increase the service cost to a grand.

Instead of going to an AD, go to Rolex directly. No doubt the AD is adding something for themselves.

I was quoted £765 inc VAT by Rolex at Kings Hill for a service and new crystal for my daughter's 1999 datejust.

Rolex will probably want to replace anything with 'patina' with new parts, which you may not wish to proceed with, either in terms of 'look' or cost.

The secondhand market seems to be strong for 'original' pieces with 'nice' patina.

They will suggest it, but you don’t have to agree. My Dad’s old datejust has a loose jubilee bracelet as the links have stretched that they wanted to replace at some huge cost as it’s bi-metal. Declined, and they did the rest of the service with no issue.

Conversely I had everything done on my sub when it was serviced, as it’s under 10 years old and going back to new appealed.

I had mine serviced last year via an AD - think it was around £800 including new glass and a replacement gold crown.

Thank you all. I’ll try some independents, I can’t quite bring myself to pay £1k.

No affiliation, but I can recommend Watchworks in Bristol, they serviced mine recently and I was very happy with the results.

Cheers.

Guessing you can drop off and collect? My Datejust that was serviced about 4.5 years ago, the crown just got slightly stiff to wind. It still winds but feels stiffer than the other Datejust we have.

My last 2 services were both via Rolex and my local AD. Both about £800 each. The sting was that they took 4 months for 1 and slightly longer for the next. They were both date just models.
A good local indy charges about £300 and turns them around in less than a month so get on line and find a good indy nearby
