So I've got a hankering for a square faced bell and Ross but I haven't got the enthusiasm for the price tag.

Then flicking through Facebook and another watch popped up from another high end manufacturer that reminded me of the oakley bomb watch.

Which led me down the rabbit hole on ebay looking at oakley watches and I've noticed a few that I like. And they do the minuteman which is square faced

But as I'm not really a watch enthusiast, just wondering if anyone knows if they are good watches/mechanisms or something that's over priced and to be avoided (price being subjective I know). I've tried Google but can't find anything from recent but I guess that's due to oakley not manufacturing watches anymore

Thanks

I think they’re popular with Oakley collectors but not because they’re particularly good watches.

Aliexpress is your friend here - the good brands all do bell and Ross esque watches.

An actual one can be had fairly reasonably though.

Some interesting reading here: https://www.oakleyforum.com/guides/oakley-watches-...

Seems they had some substance behind the styling.

As for buying one now, looks like they're pretty collectible now.

If you're after some funky, inexpensive designs do have a look on AliExpress. Cheap enough to take a punt on and from my experience, the quality exceeds even the cheapest prices.

So the ones with Swiss movement mentioned = good?

I'd be looking to wear it in rotation but just seen the omega speedmaster spacemaster which I like the look of but bit more than I was wanting to spend.

I don't know about the watches specifically but I would say don't put too much value on the term "Swiss movement" because the term seems to be very loose sometimes in the watch industry now, it can mean for example the parts were made in china then shipped to Switzerland to be put together which is not what people expect when they hear the term Swiss movement.

I'm not saying avoid them but just be aware of what you are paying for if you attach a premium to it

As tempting as it is to say something facetious like ‘about as good as Rolex sunglasses’ there is absolutely a place for fashion brands.

Fossil etc make interesting and attractive watches at a keen price point. I cannot imagine Oakley burning their brand image on a crap bought in movement when a good one is only a few dollars more.

Oakley clothing & bags are good, so why not if you like them?

Swiss quartz movements cover a range of sins. Some of them are pence, some of them are expensive high quality movements designed to be serviced.

The only reason they are expensive is because of Oakley collectors.
