Digging through stuff at home I found an Omega Seamaster watch that belonged to an Uncle of my father. His widow expressed a wish that it pass to me in a letter attached to her will.

It's an automatic (ie self winding) model dating from probably as far back as the fifties. I certainly remember Uncle Frank wearing it in the mid late sixties when we saw him and his wife on our annual visits to our Gran who lived near him.

It seems to work although losing time quite badly.

Any idea what it's worth for insurance and places that could 'service' it for me?

Assuming it is a classic gold plated dress watch - not an awful lot, 500-1000 sort of range.

I'm sure STS (Swiss Time Services) could service it for you.

Yes it sounds like it needs a service.
Try Joe Horner at Anglesea watches (use the telephone to get in touch) or RiggaTheMighty on here. Both will be considerably cheaper than STS and will offer an equivalent service.

Alternatively use this link to find a BHI qualified watchmaker near you:
https://bhi.co.uk/repairer/

Value will depend on condition, case material and movement type. A tired stainless Seamaster with a poor dial, polished case etc. could go for as little as £300. A mint condition one with a solid gold case and a 50's bumper movement could fetch close to £1500.
