I know nothing about watches. I only wear Casios. But I've seen one of these Seamasters and I want one. What do I need to know? Where's the best place to buy one from? I'm looking on Ebay, but I'm guessing thays a no no (even with their authenticity guarantee?). I'd ideally like to try it on first. Close to London. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the dangerous world of watches! biglaugh

Great choice though, the Seamaster is an icon and a perfect everyday luxury watch. There are a number of great Youtube videos that explain the seamaster better than I can but i have owned mine for about 5 years. I did end up with a 41mm tho... and I did buy from eBay... before the Authenticity Garentee was a thing...

Are you looking at the early models (aluminium bezel insert, wavy dial) or the later model (ceramic insert, smooth dial)?

Nothing wrong with buying on eBay with their authenticity guarantee, just remember they are only authenticating the watch not checking or grading it though. Fairly good article here running through the different versions though it focuses on the full sized (41 & 42mm) versions it does also mention the smaller ones.

You can do a lot worse than Watchfinder & Co, I’m sure they will have a store somewhere in London.

Used them a few times and they have always produced decent watches and a good service

Is there a reason for the 36mm? I find 36mm quite small. Looking for new or second hand?

I’d agree with this. Definitely try both sizes on if you can. Depending on what you are used to wearing, the 36mm will likely feel tiny.

Fantastic watches though.

It looks like they don’t make a 36mm 300m in the current range so you’ll be buying second hand.

Watch finder have 7 though (no ceramic ones though)

Thank you all for your comments. I am looking at an older watch, I like the design of the wavey face and blue bezel. 36mm because I have 7 inch wrists and dislike the bulky feel whenever I wear a fitness watch. That and I've worn a F-91W for years so anything feels bulky in comparison really.

£2k seems to get me what I want. How important is 'box and papers' at this price point? I guess as it'd go through Ebays authentication service, not much. But I think I'd like all the associated papers etc.

Hmm. Thanks again guys, really appreciate it.

RE the box and papers, it depends really, if you come to sell on in the future then the box and papers will help a lot, if you are satisfied its going to be a keeper then it doesn't really matter as long as you are satisfied with the authenticity.

Chrono24 is a great place to find what you're looking for, but be warned, it's a very addictive place. hehe

I bought a Panerai off eBay a couple of weeks ago for a touch over 3 grand, it went through the authentication process very quickly, and I’d have no issues with buying from there again.

I dont think you will find a 39mm watch too big to be fair. I have smallish wrists and can just about get away with 41mm. 39mm is perfect size.

Once you start, then it can become an expensive “hobby”!

Bit of an echo of the replies above but a) another endorsement of eBay authentication process from me and b) I wouldn't say 7" is a small wrist - it's bang-normal - and I'd also encourage you to look at the 41mm. I like smaller watches but a dive watch lends itself to a slightly larger size imo.

Appreciate this, thanks. Definitely need to try them both on.

Definitely... appreciate all brands are different, but I have lady wrists lol (6.25") and bought a Breitling 38mm which was far too small for me, and I don't like big watches! Eventually sold up and bought a 39mm Longines. 1mm can be a surprisingly big difference depending on the style, and other aspects like lug-to-lug and link styles.

To sum up, try them on before commiting!
