About 4 years ago I was given a Breitling watch as a long service award, that had a retail price of ~£3600. It has been worn every day, and the strap is quite knackered, valueless second hand. The rest of the watch is ‘immaculate’, no scratches on the quartz etc.

I quite fancy replacing it with the equivalent chronograph on a bracelet, that retails at ~£8100.

Is my best option to:
1 Trade in at a Breitling Store
2 Trade in at a jewellers
3 Sell privately and buy the new watch. Will be a cash transaction, not looking for credit
4 Keep existing watch as it has little/no value.

Is there another option?

What is likely to be the cost to change?

The issue with Breitling is the retail margins new (50 percent )

Which helps and hurts here .

So your existing watch will have suffered value wise most likely , at the same time - very keen discounts to be sought on the new model which should help soften the blow.

Breitling aren’t the only brand with huge margins from new but it’s often a shock to people to realise how much they’ve lost out the door .

It didn't cost me anything. But the downside is that I don't have a 'purchase' receipt.

If you want low friction your best bet is probably trading it for a used watch.

I wouldn't worry too much about a receipt, not going to affect it's value.

The easiest option is to fill in the form on watchfinder and they will quote you to purchase it.

Contacting Watchfinder is a reasonable starting point. A Breitling Boutique may not take it in as apart exchange at all, Unfortunately Breitling's do take a big hit from their new value when it comes to second hand values so you may decide that when you are quoted a value it's not worth trading in if the strap is as bad as you describe.

I say this as a Breitling owner myself, albeit I bought mine from Watchfinder and paid about half it's RRP new at about 18 months old in mint condition, they were quick to give me a discount code when I enquired too.

I do like Breitling watches but they don't hold their value from new very well unfortunately
