Raymond Weil - advice wanted.

I'm not into watches and have never spent more than £100 on a watch, so would appreciate the advice of the enthusiasts.

Big Anniversary coming up this year and Mrs S has decided she would like a nice watch.
More specifically, she seems to have her heart set on one of these

Couple of questions.

Is it worth buying? ( ie not a load of overpriced tat )

Where's the best place in the UK to buy one?

Umm, well, $3000 on a quartz watch - I can't believe that is good value for money.



Raymond Weil are not, shall we say, in the top tier of Swiss watch makers ...

Just IMO - but it looks the type of watch to me which will quickly look like a £5 market special. The two tone isnt 'gold' as far as I can see, so might be some kind of plate, which wont look good for long.



Its quartz too, which is a big no-no for me - essentially the quartz movement in that could be the same as one in a £50 watch.



For £1,500 you could get something really nice - you might be able to get a ladies rolex from one of the (secondhand) dealers - not everyone's cup of tea but at least it will still look ok (and be running) in 10/20/30 years time (see the ladies watches here: http://www.secondtimeround.biz/)

Maxf I appreciate the advice, but as this is a special event, buying secondhand is no-no. Given the sort of budget I mentioned, what other brand names should I look at?.



As far as watches go, I don't know a chrongraphic proton from a porsche, so could easily have the wool pulled over my eyes. To Mrs S, it's a piece of jewellery and so appearance is everything.

Ah, I see! I'm not really sure what to suggest - my GF has a reduced size speedmaster, so not really what you are thinking of



You look like you are close to Manchester/Leeds - I'd go and have a look and see what takes your fancy to be honest in the big jewellers. Don't forget to ask for a discount (you might get 10-15%)!

Reymond Weil are not a quality manufacturer. That watch, at $3000 will be worth about $500 the moment you take it out of the box, if you are lucky....



For that money get her a second hand Cartier - she will love that, as my missus did.

I'd go for a second hand Rolex bi-metal datejust, if she doesn't like it or gets fed up you will get your money back - if she loves it and keeps it 10 years - you may get more than you paid for it.



I think they look cool as well, but then I would, cos thats just what I bought for my wife 2 christmas's ago.



being a ladies its not too flashy with the gold.



there are lots of dealers on ebay as well - do a search and follow the links to thier shops.

however, this is *your* choice - it is a special anniversary so you (possibly rightly) feel 2nd hand is not on. if she's not bothered about the *quality* of the watch and she lives the look of that one and you have the funds, then no problem.

reading between the lines i think you're saying she would not be happy with a better quality watch (even it was cheaper) that looked different to the raymond weil.

how would she know if she never saw the receipt. Even second hand, I doubt you can tell from new one if you didn't know what you were looking for.

Is your wife really going to have a hang up about the mechanism in a watch? If it's a gift for an Anniversary what's the likelyhood of it ever being sold?

I'd buy her the watch she actually likes. Most people would far rather have a new watch as a gift, rather than a used one which maybe better value.

I bought my sister a watch for her 21st, and I'm sure she doesn't have a clue how it works but if it wasn't new she'd have twigged and I doubt she'd have worn it.

So instead of a used Piguet Royal Oak S/S she's got a bottom of the range Rolex. Now to the people on this forum I'm sure that's a stupid choice but when buying presents for girls forget about logic.
