Tiffany Watches and or help/recommendations.

My Fiancee wants to buy me a nice watch for my 40th, we've looked around but cannot find anything that I particularly like, I like the look of some of the Tag Heuer Carreras, but when I tried one on it felt too bulky so I remain searching still.

She has been looking at the Tiffany website, for an engagement ring, and likes the look of a couple of the men's watches, but I remain unconvinced that you're not paying just for the name 'Tiffany'.

What are people opinions of these watches, are they worth the money or just over priced tat?

OR...any recommendations for a nice watch, preferably silver, a blue face, leather strap and not too bulky. I can't say I've seen anything quite right so far. Budget, well up to £2K I suppose although would prefer less, but might go to more for the 'right' watch.

I have to admit I am a bit of a watch "fascist" and believe that watches should only be made by Watchmakers. e.g I like Montblanc Pens but leave the watches, alone!! Tiffany is a jewelers and a very fashionable (at the moment) one at that. Buying a ring from them is OK but I wouldn't touch the watches. I am a little extreme and a bit of a hypocrite too as I could be tempted by a Chopard watch.

For around the £2k budget the world is you oyster (Rolex?)

Recommendations are tough to make without a bit more info but it sounds like you don't want anything too sporty (bulky). IWC make some great classic looking watches which cross that dress-sport watch divide pretty well. If you want to save some cash then look at an Omega?

Have a look at watches.co.uk and see what styles you like to look off.

Thanks for the reply. My take on Tiffany watches is that they don't appear on any of the watches websites and therefore are not something which is being sold for it's functionality / appeal, but more for the supposed exclusivity of the Tiffany name. But seeing as I'm not particularly into jewelry, that Tiffany name means next to nought for me.

I've never really been into watches, in fact I've had a fairly cheap Raymond Weil for about 15 years. Small, leather strap, never had a moments problem with except for a couple of batteries and 3 straps. Oh , and a glass face when I broke the original on my boy's forehead.

But with a new Fiancee wanting to replace my old watch, and having a bit more money available now I'd like a nice watch to be worn everyday for the next 15 years or so.

I've looked round a lot of the websites, spent hours looking, but all the ones I like the look of, Carrera for example, seem so large when I tried them on. So bulky. So I like that look, but don't want so a bulky thick watch.

Is it becuase the movements in these watches, being mechanical, force the cases to be so bulky?

I even went through the "PH watches on our wrists" thread last night and didn't see much that jumped out at me.

I suppose the Tag Heuers are generally my favourite 'look' of watch, but IWC also seem to do a few which could be simple enough to be classy , but classy looking enough to justify the cost.

If the current carrera is too bulky, you could try one of the older carreras?

You could either get an original vintage 60s one, or one of the more recent reissues which have a smaller case... huge difference in size (and the watch itself- movement, glass, no date etc) and thickness.
Reissues and original vintage ones are easily identified by only having 'Heuer' on the dial instead of TAG Heuer.

My heuer reissue one on left (and top), and the newer automatic tag heuer logoed on on the right :





- pic speaks for itself in terms of size. Reissue is perfect on my wrist, newer one feels a little too big and heavy for me, so maybe you have skinny wrists like me


Just a suggestion- cant help you on the Tiffany thing, but I know I wouldnt buy one..

I must admit the IWC range has some nice looking watches, not to fussy but classy looking at he same time. Im liking the Pilot and Pilot spitfire ranges which also come in midsizes which could be ideal!

Where can I get to actually see some in the flesh before spending this kind of money?

Correct me if im wrong but i belive the reason you dont see tiffany of any websites is that its only available from tiffany stores
