That's what people said when the GMTII was replaced with the new 116710LN but it hasn't been the case.
I expect many people who buy a ROLEX for diving or for a diving image will want whatever the new model is, which I suppose is going to be the Deep Sea or new ss Submariner.
Sea Dweller values, as most ROLEX sports models have been high for some time but I doubt discontinuing the Sea Dweller will increase them much in the short term myself.
ROLEX is only discontinuing it because it sold less well than the Submariner and GMT11. If they were selling loads of them they would still be producing them or just have given them the same larger case and maxi dial with better bracelet lock that the new GMT and Submariners have. The fact that they have replaced it with the Deep Sea kind of backs this up doesn't it?
As for values going up why is someone going to want to buy a second hand one now if they haven't bought one before?
It is a nice watch though.

The fact that the SD sold far less well is EXACTLY why it may well be a good punt for the future....but I'd say you will have to wait some time indeed...many years. GMTs are far more ubiquitous so in the future will be less desirable than a rare model, as a rule. Thus SD a better long term punt IMHO
Think on it...60s and 70s Daytonas...unpopular and slow sellers when launched as eclisped at the time by rival products.
Milgauss...very slow seller indeed, for years only special order.
Both have gone nuts in recent years. But time elapsed = 30 years plus. A long time to realise a profit.
Bearing in mind how mad the market has gone for 70s sport rolex this is the same kind of pattern seen in classic car markets - "The 30 year rule".
So I am going to buy a brand new old seadweller for my 18 month year old, stick it in a deposit box and when he's 21, present it to him

You're speculating on which Rolex models MAY be valuable in 30 years from now.The OP suggested that the discontinuation of the Sea Dweller would hugely increase the second hand prices in the short term, I don't think that will happen.

Like I said it MAY be a good punt for the future and you will have to wait a long time to find out. In other words, is this not saying the same as you, i.e. it won't in the short term?
Or am I missing something here?
I'm quite happy that its been discontinued - I love mine to peices and the fact that it is about as understated as you can get for a Rolex, is brilliant.
I also love the relative rareness, compared to the Subs.
I think the new Deep Sea will sell far more units as its more bling, larger and pretty (if you like that sort of thing) making the SD more collectable than you think.

I own a Rolex Sea Dweller, that I bought used about 15 years ago, I paid $800 dollars for it. I just had it serviced by The Rolex Service Center in Dallas, Texas and had a new crystal put on it. It was appraised at $6,000, the watch looks brand new and is in almost mint condition. I am looking to replace the back of it because the black paint has rubbed off. Once I replace the backing my watch will be just as good as a new one, which will be hard to find now that Rolex will stop making them. No matter the reason why Rolex will not make them anymore the value of this product will eventually go up just like every other product that is no longer made. It seems people will go out and buy something that will no longer be made for some reason or another. It's kind of like when someone famous dies and people go out and by something about that person. I remember when Dale Earnhardt Sr. died and how his products skyrocketed and how people raised their prices on all the products with his name or picture on it. I checked eBay out and the average price for a used Sea Dweller is $4,000 and I for the new Deep Sea Sea Dweller is $8,000. You can buy a brand new Deep Sea for $9,200. I have promised my youngest son my Rolex and hopefully he will pass it down to his son and eventually it will continue to be passed down until who knows. All I know is that a Rolex will out live his/her owner, you can't go wrong with buying a Rolex wether new or used.

^^^^^^ What he said.I also love the relative rareness, compared to the Subs.
I bought mine about a year ago pre-owned & have been offered circa 50% more than I paid for it, but have no intention of selling.
