People buying daytonas to sell ! it anoys me
Discussion
Speaking to someone in the office today he is trying to put his name on a list for a daytona so he can sell it and make a profit it anoys me that there seems to be a waiting list mainly because most people only buy them to sell and make a profit and the people who actually want one cant unless they pay a premium.
When i sold my GMT even old second hand daytonas were selling for very strong money its crazy i ended up buying a new yachtmaster which is fab but i just cant help looking at it wishing i had of got a daytona.
Do you think they ever just be available

Anyone can buy one, you just have to wait 7 years. That goes for the speculators too. Unfortunately, just a result of demand and supply. IMO, Rolex should either increase production or up the list price to £6.5k.When i sold my GMT even old second hand daytonas were selling for very strong money its crazy i ended up buying a new yachtmaster which is fab but i just cant help looking at it wishing i had of got a daytona.

They are easy enough to be had if you know how, and in the current climate I can't help but think that the premiums will disappear as city boys try to offload their toys. If your mate does have to wait 7 years then I'm sure he could use the money to get a bigger return in other ways while he waits.
I was in California in August and was with a client when he walked into a Rolex boutique and bought a 2008 SS Daytona with a black face at list, straight off the street. We were in Carmel too, where there's no shortage of money and things to spend it on.
Horses for courses and all that, but I just wasn't hugely impressed with the watch and, three months later, nor is he. It is slightly too shiny and the letters on the inside of the dial wall (if that's how you describe it) make it just slightly too bling for my taste. That and the knowledge that the money could buy 2-3 fantastic watches on the used market of course...

Repost - there's already a lengthy topic on this.
End of the day, if there's a profit to be made, people will speculate, simple as that. Happens with homes, cars, watches, busunisses, etc.... If you can get something in limited supply but high demand, people will make money out of it. If you don't like the free market, move to a communist state where most people aren't worried about daytona prices, and are more worried about if they are going to eat dinner that evening!
If you enjoy the benefits of living in a free market economy, you have to take the bad side also...

It's tough out there!
My best mate wants one and his missus has aksed me to look for one for him for their wedding next year!
He is looking for a white face, stainless, fat hands/ latest model... But they are like hens teeth or mega-money!
Anyone know of a BNIB one going for £6k or less?

My advice is to try contacting Rolex main dealers outside London and the south east - i was after a SS Submariner Date about 6 years ago when it was THE watch to have. i never even saw one at a dealer in central London where i lived at the time, nore elsewhere in the SE. I was given the story about 2-3 year waiting list, pay a premium etc etc which frankly struck me as a load of tosh. i called a number of dealers around the UK and bought a watch from Whittles in my home town of Preston, Lancs. They told me they don't keep a waiting list, each month the Rolex rep turns up with their quota of watches and there is an element of pot luck what they get but they will get about 6 Submariners a year (at that time). The just put them in the window and it is first come, first served. I rang each month and, in December 2002, they had just got one in so paid by debit card over the phone and collected when i was next up north - not sure how many Daytona's they get through but I would have thought worth a call and a chat. I could be wrong but presumably most other regional Rolex dealers will operate in a similar way. Whittles did express some concern that I was a dealer but i told them i was a local - best to adopt an appropriate regional accent for the jeweller!
What you need to do is buy from a Rolex dealer that owns the shop, NOT a manager of Goldsmiths etc. It is the shop managers that sell most of the steel Daytona's at a profit. The shop managers get the watches and sell them for profit and to be honest why would'nt they ?
Trust me there is not a shortage of steel Daytona's
I was introduced to a Rolex offical dealer (who owned his own shop) I told him I wanted a white faced steel daytona, and ( THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT ) I wanted a nice watch for my wife. So my wife picked a very nice watch £5k and I got a white faced steel daytona at the retail price. How long did I wait for the watch ?? Nine days !!
Now before you all start, I was buying my wife a crimbo presy anyway, the watch she picked will always be worth the money or I would not have bought it her.
Basicaly a shop owner will save this allocation of daytona's for his best customers or customers he wants to come back to him. You dont have to just buy watches Im sure if you a nice ring it will have the same effect.
A shop manager at Goldsmiths etc does not care as he is on a wage with a bit of commission and he can get a lot more, as we know for a steel daytona elsewhere.

I tried that in all of the official dealers in Edinburgh. Wanted a Rolex for the missus graduation pressie, and would it help me on a Daytona purchase. They all laughed!Trust me there is not a shortage of steel Daytona's
