Im 30 in the new year and the missus wants to get me a nice watch (and i agree) so ive been looking around and quite fancy either of the 2 below.

Raymond Weil Freelancer
http://www.jurawatches.co.uk/watch.asp?productid=5...

Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL or Power Control
http://www.chopard.com/#gents/mille%20miglia/20/2/...

but...(you knew that was coming...) ive read a few threads here where the RW watches dont seem favourable, any reason for this? what about Chopard? good / bad?

I have no clue about watches really, as only had a cheap one when i was younger and havent wore any watch for years now.

Anything else i should be looking at, the more i think about it the style of the RW is much more what im after.

There'll be a bunch of people along in a second to tell you that you really should consider an IWC an Omega, or whatever.

Chopard, although not a whole watch manufacturer, have been in the watch business for a very long time, The products are high quality, they also produce many of their own movements. I've had the old white faced GT XL for a couple of years now, no complaints here. They are perhaps a little over priced.

Chopard also have a long standing motorsport connection.

If you like it...etc.

Raymond Weil are a recent entrant to the whole Swiss watch making thing. Raymond used to design for other manufactures, but in 1976 decided to go solo. The company is independent and still family owned. Quality? No personal experience, but a client has one he paid around £700 for and is happy with.

I ended up buying a Rolex Submariner about 2 months ago, but had my eye on the Freelancer - still do as an addition to my collection. Has a nice look and feel to it. No experience of RW reliability however, and no knowledge of Chopard. Good luck in your search.

I'm surprised that the RW is the same sort of price bracket as the Chopard tbh, assuming that it is?

My personal choice of two would be the Chopard. They are a quality watch brand IMHO, and whilst this isn't quite as good quality as their own L.U.C manufacture, they have COSC approved movements and I've seen a few in the flesh and they are well made, beautifully finished items.

The Weil on the other hand is a nice enough watch, but just not quite as special. In the current climate I'd be surprised if you would have to pay list too, but best speak to a broker about that.

Oh and to echo what someone else said - your budget does afford you a lot of choice, but then you already knew that wink ....

Out of those two? Chopard, by a country mile.

They have produced a 'cult' watch - Happy Diamonds, and even support the motor circuit.

They're not really, Chopard roughly £2200-£2500, RW £1600 ish, on the few websites ive found them on.

If i keep going at this rate ill need to buy more than one watch, im half way through the PH Wrists Check 2008 thread and have a list of about 5 now, with this one being my fave so far (but maybe in a different colour).

With a few Sinn and IWC ones i like too....

Yep, that's an excellent choice. I don't regret buying mine at all, and it looks fantastic on its dark brown crocodile strap. Currently trying to stop myself from hitting the buy button on a Sinn 856 too.

I'd go with the Chopard!

I really like Chopard's, they look a little bit different from the norm and are much nicer than the stereotypical Omega's etc. I got offered a pretty good deal on a limited Chopard all in black - was surprised how much the dealer was willing to move; guess its down to the market etc so if you go down that route make sure you haggle!!!

Chopard for me, I got to handle a couple in the AD in Zurich airport recently and they are very nice watches and really beautifully made.

Personally I wouldn't have the GT XL, because it is: a) very big and b) I do't care for the cyclops but that's pure personal preference, so if you like it go for it.

To clarify one point made above the Mille Miglias do not have in house movements, they are all ETA based; the L.U.C. models use in-house movements.

Ha, that's my Stowa Marine Original.

Not many options with an MO to be honest, you can get a brushed or polished case, you can change the strap, and, err, that's it. I didn't keep that startling blue strap for long, I now have it on a very sutle navy blue alligator - doesn't really show the colour or the blued hands but here it is.

Can't say I know the quality of RW - never looked at them.

There's a few Chopards that are nice - I have a very cool Chopard pen infact.

tertius, is that an official Stowa strap? If not can you point me towards it?

Which one? Neither the electric blue one in the pic nor the navy one I have it on now is an "official" Stowa strap.

However, the electric blue one is a fairly cheap Condor from here; the navy one is a rather more expensive RIOS 1931 alligator which I got from Sirtoli.

If you particularly want a strap with Stowa branding, they do offer a navy alligator strap on their site: here but I doubt if its better than the Sirtoli/RIOS strap to be honest.

When you are looking make sure you are clear if you are looking at genuine alligator or alligator grain, which is regular leather printed to look like alligator. The price difference is eye-watering.

I've had several Chopards. Love the MMs.

Different league entirely to Raymond Vile, IMO.
