FYI - I thought I'd update you on the market for SDs out here.

A colleague, having admired my SD, bought himself one for his birthday. They are in huge demand here now. He managed to find one and was able to have it put on hold for him for a day while he made the final decision - within that day, he had 7 calls from the dealer asking if he still wanted it as others had asked for it.

Seems there are but a handfull left and people are dying to get hold of them - dealer said that the new DSSSD is not selling that well.

I get where you're coming from but there's only one company that runs all the Rolex ADs (along with most of the prestige brands) and over the last month or so the SDs have been flying out and they have hardly any left and I beleive those or being held.

I was planning on getting a 16600 next year until I heard about Rolex stopping production. After a manic search through places like dream-watches and watches.co.uk and getting either "none left" or "I'll have one more in next week. £4500 and it's yours...", I tried my local(ish) AD George Pragnells in Stratford. Amazingly they had one in stock - it actually turned out to be their last one with no plans for any more - and being a Rolex AD meant it was at the list price of £3690.

Naturally I placed an immediate deposit and picked it up the next day. Had it for just under 2 weeks now and love it. Here's to hoping it starts appreciating in value too!!

'ello XJS, i hope and think that i have seen every scam going since being out here and that is one easy "pressure" scam if ever ive heard of it. Despite the AD being "mates" for a long time with the buyer, at the end of the day he is in business and when he sees a deal he wants to close it and make sure it stays closed.

Changing the subject slightly:

I was scouring the back streets of Saigon last week and found a very interesting shop, selling Rolex "original spares" Sub faces, SD faces and hands, double red faces, cases and crowns. An amazing amount of kit in the shop, i will try to get a couple of shots on the camera next time im in there, i dont doubt for one minute that they were copies. Having had a very close look they were very good, even had very old ones with "built in" patina and slight crazing on the face. On enquiry i was told they come fron HK, but i doubt it, more like China maybe they had transitted through HK.

An interesting find.

Am off to KL soon so i shall do my damndest to get my SD over there at a decent knock down price

if you don't mind second hand, there are some very reputable second hand sellers in singa, and with the credit crunch they have had thier stocks replenished somewhat!!

Let me get back to you on that one so that i make sure i give you the right addresses / names etc.

But basically one just off Raffles Place (under the Hitachi Tower / Opposite the AMEX center) gets some very high end watches at good prices. They only do pieces with all paperwork and packaging so good for collector.

There is one second hand rolex specialist opposite Paragon on Orchard that is 100% reputable (unlike many in there)

And i forget where exactly but another rolex pawn brokers in Little India off racecource road.

Remember most all "honourable" watch brokers / pawn brokers in singapore will happily (with some pushing - remind them that its a big ticket item etc etc)take the watch in question to the relavent main agents for verification with you in attendance (for a fee) if you are not 100% sure.

Will get back tomorrow with correct shop names.

ETA the one in Raffles is probably best bet for an IWC (and always try a haggle wink )

I put the word original in "quotes" to indicate that i have no idea if they were real or not, more than likely not, knowing what i know about the back streets of Saigon. Yes you are correct about the prices of genuine old spares for Subs and SD's they do fetch a small fortune, so i doubt very much that these were real.

The faces were US$50 each, i dont know about hands or cases. I suppose i could start a business in buying these "unknown" parts and flogging them on Ebay at a massive up-lift........but i wont.
