Suggestions for everyday, hard-wearing watch

Hi folks!

I haven't worn a watch for over ten years and now want to get one that is robust and reliable. I want one with a face that one can easily read the time off, that is, no fancy dials where you have to guess what minute past the hour it is, and that shows the date.

Browsing Amazon I was taken by Tissot having initially set out looking at Baby-G ones. I like plain and simple designs.

• I don't plan to go swimming wearing it so water resistant depth isn't significant.

• Is titanium the way to go?

• Is quartz the best option?

This one was a little outside my intended budget of sub-£150, but I like the fact that it's grey face is unusual:

Baby-G of course are cheap and look fairly robust, but aren't as stylish.

I'll have a look at these and others from Tissot and Baby-G range in a jewellers but I am interested to know what you folks think as I know very little about the finer details of watches and haven't ever spent more than £25 on one.

I know of a Citizen dress watch that's been up Everest and the Dolomites and still works. Looks a little scratched... well, ok, it's scratched to death... but it still tells the time... and it tells a story... which is more than can be said for most G-shock watches bought to look like the sofa-surfing owner does stuff. Much like an urban 4x4 cum MPV.

Hi Emma,I Bought a Tissot Generosi-T for an Christmas present as it was a good compromise on quality / fashion, water proof to 30m, nicely finished & presented

GF wanted something that wasn't to traditional but I wouldn't pay OTT prices for some fashion branded junk watch which if it wasnt for the 'name' would be 1/2 the price

That sounds interesting. Have you got a link to the story, or to the model of watch?

I think that BabyG will look a bit too clunky on my small wrists. As I said in my initial post, I want something that is simple, functions well and will withstand a few knocks and will last me more than three years.

It's just a friend; no story as such. She has a very feminine/elegant gold bracelet Eco-drive that looks like it's been in 'Nam.

Citizen do a very nice ladies eco-drive in titanium - 100m water resistance so fine to swim in. Have bought one to give as a christmas present and am very impressed. Had to order online though, couldn't find a ciziten dealer who stocked it.

I saw that watch on their website yesterday and thought it worth looking at. The two shops in town I could find stocking Citizen didn't stock it (and seemed to have run out of quite a few ladies lines).

I think I'll take a trip into London as I'd like to try it on to see how it feels and looks. It's a choice at the moment between that Citizen and three Tissot.

Not surprised they've run out. I think something is happening next Thursday.

I would choose a Citizen over a Tissot just for the fact that you don't have to change the battery and therefore break the waterproof seal.

As I say, I simply couldn't find anywhere that stocked it. Ernest Jones were willing to get one in for me to look at though, worth giving them a call a few days before.

Have you considered a Christopher Ward? They get good reviews on here and come with a sapphrire crystal face which should help with the longevity and robustness. The C2 Lido fits your "plain and simple" criteria and is similar in style to the other options you're looking at:

That looks lovely but I think the logo is too dominant. It probably looks less 'full' on a larger, Gent's face. Thanks for the suggestion though

No problem. I don't personally think the logo is overly large, but yours is the only opinion that counts in this instance.

It's the CW bit I don't like. It overstates matters. Either the name or the logo would be sufficient. I know it sounds daft but I'm a funny one when it comes to logos.
