After a good 5 hours looking round the sales, I'm determined to buy an Omega Planet Ocean (see other thread), but have a couple of little questions.

Services - how often and how much do you expect to pay? As well as cash discounts I've been offered a free service (proper one at Omega, not an in-house service) by some shops. I was wondering what this was generally worth. They tell me £250-300 but I'd like a more independent answer. And is 5 years about right before it needs a service?

The orange... I'm torn between an orange bezel with orange numbers or a black bezel with orange numbers, both on a steel bracelet. Opinions? Is any combination "frowned upon" at resell time (this is only a minor consideration, but I'm really having trouble making my mind up)? My gut feeling is towards the orange bezel but I wonder if it might start to look a little tacky a while down the line, or look a little blingy in a suit. Certainly there are a lot more black bezels in the displays...

Sorry for all the questions - just want to make sure I do a good job on my first watch purchase!

Thanks,
Mark

The service information sounds accurate.

In terms of the bezel, I went through the same dilemma, and then suddenly it dawned on me, I wanted the black bezel. In my opinion, it won't tire me, it can still look quite smart, and I love the contrast, and when coupled with a decent quality strap, the result is a very manly looking piece biggrin

Its not clean in these shots, but you get the idea smile

Buy the bezel that does it for you now...

If you're worried about growing tired of the orange, don't forget you can always buy a black bezel from otto frei at a later date.

PS - If I were you I'd push for the biggest discount you can get and wouldn't worry about getting a free service, and I don't think they cost £300 quid for a basic one.

FYI A full 'Omega Service' sounds posh, but in reality they'll only send it to Eastleigh, not back to Switzerland (my friend's mum works there, and it's not as 'grand' as it sounds)!! biggrin

I'm sure you can pick one up for £1500 (non-chrono model) if you do your homework!

Go for it - it's a GREAT watch! thumbup

I've got the PO with the orange bezel and it's not as in-yer-face as you might think. Photographs make it considerably more orange than reality; also, when you see the watch as a whole, on your wrist, you realise there's a whole lotta steel toning things down.

I have this one

Looks great and not as in your face as photos suggest. I was not sure about how it looked in pictures and to a degree in the shop window. However when I tried it on it just worked. Bezel can always be replaced if you fancy a change or it looks dated.

Had my seamaster serviced at omega and it was £180 last year. They managed to scratch the bezel whilst in their care. Fortunately the jewellers agreed it would have damaged the glass if it had been caused during normal wear. Omega replaced FOC.

I though one of the benefits of co-axial was the longer service interval. I think I was told 10 years when I bought mine.

I'm currently being very tempted by a PO and am leaning towards black bezel but with orange numbers, just enough colour for me while staying understated.

would be interested to see where you can grab one for £1500 though....smile

I've arranged 2 good deals at the moment, the difference being I can either save £50, or have a free service. Neither retailer will budge any lower though. I'm told the free service will be a proper Omega service, not an in-house jobbie. Whaddaya reckon?

P.S. - Once I've decided what I'm doing I'll give you my findings on which shops are discounting and what they're offering - sounds like a couple of people are interested to hear

The co-axial movement in the PO won't need servicing for years. So it's up to you whether a saving now or a saving much later is more important.

The PO lists at £2K. I got 15% off mine at a local jeweller. Any more discount than that and it's a mega bargain.

I got mine Via Dominic H on here.

Give him a pm, not seen him post in a while, but his price was very good at the time smile

And I got 20% off list. (sept)

I'm having trouble contacting Dom. I've tried both his numbers several times but no answer so far. I'd prefer to talk to him in person than via email.

Regarding discounts - I've found 20% pretty easy to get at the moment (at least 3 places, 2 of which are throwing in a free service). And one place is doing 25% but with a limited range (and no service). Now I'm onto haggling over multiple watch deals...!

I got my 42mm black bezel from watchfinderuk pre-owned for £1300 (Up ay £1350 and then a further £50 off for being a return customer).
Turned out to be just 6 weeks old. Bargain and great service.
They've got a few pre-owned in at the moment for around £1400, gotta be worth a look.

I have recently bought a PO chrono with steel bracelet, orange numbers and black bezel. Lovely watch but bloody massive and really heavy. You need to have big hands and wrists to carry it off imo!

Agree with the above.

If you have small forearms and hands don't bother with the 45mm

Plus one.

I have 7.5" wrists and hands like spades, so I get away with it.

...ETA; just about.

Yeh, I think that's the kind of level you need, mine were 8 something, and also silly hands.

But the 42mm on a smaller man would still have the same effect.

The other thing I would say was that I was all ready to order the orange one with the black strap then decided I should go and have a look before pressing the button,

Really chuffed I did as I ended up not liking it! The orange bezel is nowhere near as bright as it appears in the pictures and imo looked a little tacky getmecoat

On my travels around all the jewelers I've found you can actually get a brand new one on a strap for a smidge under £1400!

Apologies, I've clearly been at the spastic juice and saw £1500 in someone else's post and thought it was yours!
If you have an orange obsession then might be worth seeing how much further watchfinder will stretch. 1400 is merely the starter for 10.
