Well, I'm going to be.

The A. Lange & Söhne catalogue dropped through the door today, replete with price list.

It's a large-format hardback book, with lots of fascinating stuff about how their various complications work, and the history of the company. It's a good read. There's lots of pictures of edibly beautiful watches. It's a trial, but the price list keeps you grounded.

And then, just as you think you're doing all right, you're in control, the credit card and other sources of unrepayable finance (i.e. selling the wife, the car, the animals, the kids) are going to remain untouched, there's this:

The bds.

Apologies for crappy pic. I don't have a scanner.

If you are referring to the screws - they aren't anodised but heat blued.

really? that looks like anodising to me, the pink bits look like anodising too. Im happy to be proved wrong though. Its just that pink and blue like that remind me of 1990's mountain bikes and all the lycra horrors that go with it! hehe

I would imagine that the 'pink bits' are gemstones...

The "pink bits" are rubies.

People wot make watches said:
Blued Screws: Steel parts are slowly and cautiously heated (annealed) to about 300°C. This process coats the metal with an extremely thin, shimmering film of cornflower-blue magnetite.

The pink bits are the 'jewels', or jewel bearings, although they are (mostly?) synthetic now:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewel_bearing

The blue bits are 'blued' steel, made as already mentioned by heating the metal in a mixture of chemicals:

I was an anodised metal junkie in my mb days too! Although never really had the legs for lycra!! biggrin

PS - It looks gorgeous CJ!

Oi, do you mind - I have a pink and blue mountain bike ... from the '90s ... biggrin

Really they aren't anodised, they may conceivably be chemically blued but I'm pretty sure Lange will use heat bluing, and as posted above the "pink bits" are jewels, used as bearings.

The use of both bluing and jewels in watchmaking somewhat predates mountain biking ...

I have been enjoying that catalogue for a good few months now - just stunning and makes you truly appreciate the work that goes into creating each and every watch. Just a shame I can't enjoy any of the watches...

Im glad to be proved wrong biggrin heat blueing isnt something Ive seen achieve such a uniformity of colour before so I now have something else I cant afford, to desire! (thanks CJ!)

There is nothing on the price-list less than £8,700; the Datograph, the innards of which are illustrated above, starts at £28,700.

Got my eye on a Dato.

Simply, for me, the nicest watch available today.

When you handle one it is bliss and the attention to detail is incredible. I rate them over Patek.

I am looking to buy a proper watch later this year hopefully, so I've been looking at a few catalogues, I've ordered this one too but I didn't realise they were that expensive! I'll still enjoy looking at the catalogue anyway.
