I have a lot of cash savings, but with rates being so low I thought I would entertain the idea of starting a small watch collection, part of my 'investment' portfolio if you will! I don't really want to suffer any depreciation. Is this realistic?

I can afford to lose the money but I do like the idea of starting a nice collection rather than giving my money to a bank to sit on.

I need a 'daily driver', at around £150. The rest can be spent on one or several watches.

What would you go for?

If it were my money and i was in this for an investment, i would look at second hand vintage watches, something classic. Such as an old omega speed master or something along those lines.

I could however be taking rubbish so wait for someone on here to correct me.

Spot on, there was a speedy on the classifieds here for about £800, absolute steal but vanished now.
The monaco chrono at 750 was a good deal too. Could easily punt it for 4-500 more.

If you want a "daily diver" for your "daily driver", I'm going to be predictable and say Seiko Black Monster. Or orange, if you prefer. Should be doable easily for about £120-£140.

As for 900-ish? I'd put another hundred quid to it and get a Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope:

Anything new will depreciate, so as has already been said, you need to go vintage to have any chance of the watch keeping its value.

Get a Seiko in your prefered style for your daily watch. There are so many options for vintage that I would not dare to suggest something !

For a daily watch I'd buy a G-Shock!

Regards investments, something with a real heritage name is always good, but not too common.

A Universal Geneve or a Zenith would be good choices.

I'd avoid bi-metal and either go for a steel sports watch or a vintage gold dress watch.
