Have found a Seiko Diver that I like in a store overseas (in the US). If I buy, how does it work with customs/taxes etc? Will I get stung with import duties etc and if so how does this happen?

Sorry for the naive post, but I've never done this before!

Thanks in advance.

What model is it?

I asked this a while a go.

I think you have to pay the tax on what the product is valued at in this country, or something along those lines.

have you had a look for it on Ebay? there are a few shops on there that have loads of Seiko watches in stock, and are based in the UK, so you won't have to pay tax?

If its a new watch you have to pay the VAT due when it comes into the country, that is VAT based on the list price in the UK not where you may have bought it.

Having said that, that only happens if they catch it. I know one trick used to be sending in two parcels, one with the packaging and one with the watch. The watch would slip in under the radar and he packaging would just be an empty box. Not sure people do that now though!!!
Taken from the other thread!

I've bought a number of things from overseas (outside EU) in the last twelve months, including a watch. The only item that got collared by customs was the watch which came from Japan using their postal service and then Parcelforce when it arrived here. I had to pay import duty, VAT and a handling charge before they would release the item. I didn't really do my research so with these charges added I could have bought the same model here for slightly less.

Would you still get stung if the watch came from inside Europe?

Something along the lines of a Stowa?

No charges if ordered from inside the EU.

Getting it sent over or buying when you're over there?
You get a certain allowance for goods you buy yourself I think.
In the region of a couple of hundred quid.

Cheers for the advice. Getting it sent over. Had a quick look on the customs website and I think it will only cost me £20 on top for the VAT. No import tax as the value is below £200. Sorted- just need to order!

Thanks!

Do you still have to pay if the watch is a used item? Any others with experience of buying from Timezone or watchuseek in the US have any experience?

Parcelfarce will likely put an extra £10 on top of that for 'clearance fees'.

I've just had to pay customs for one last night and they appear to have charged me straight 15% VAT + handling fee - nothing else. I'm not quite sure why its not more but I'm not arguing

I've had a hit rate of about 30% with customs on anything from watches to Camera bits.

It comes as a nasty surprise especially now the pound is so week, it can wipe out any potential savings. You get the double whammy of it costing more and because it has cost more, the tax is more as well.

Normally its the declared value plus the postage - that the tax is based on. If they open it and find it declared wrong then they may do this. Both watches I have imported have been one offs - so impossible to value based on a UK price.

With the ste exchange rate, there is no point ordering from the US any more.

Plus customs are st hot on intercepting packages for charges. Plus the usual extortionate handling charges from the parcel company.

Cheaper to buy in the UK and haggle a discount.
