I have sold many many things on Ebay, mostly without any problems but now I want to part with my Rolex the thought of all the scam potential on such a small high-value item fills me with dread. Has anybody had good or bad experiences of selling ( or buying ) watches on Ebay? How do you post an item of such value? it's an Oyster Perpetual Explorer. I guess the high street buyers would take the p1ss on value?

Did you post these items, or meet the buyers in person?

there was a post on here last week about a guy who'd sold his watches on ebay, got ripped off by the buyer saying the watches were fake, and sending back a fake of the one purchased

ebay isnt a problem if they meet up pay cash and go its paypal that gives the problems

i think most buyers would want to meet up to see the watch in the flesh anyway, i sold my gmt 2 on there met the guy at a rolex dealer of his choice within 10miles of where i live he gave them £20 to confirm its real we then went to the bank 2 doors along he paid it in to my account all done and i didnt even need to count / check it

I've sold 2 Tudor Chronos, a JLC, a Longines and a Zenith El P Flyback (cloured dial)* all on the bay with no problems at all

In each case they were sold to a buyer with high positive feedback, they sent the dosh by paypal andI waited until it had cleared then sent the item by post. I've even sold a Moog this way (watches are easier to post though!)

Good luck

Cheers

I have bought and sold some 60+ high value watches on e-bay, mostly gold Rolexe's, Breitlings,Connies etc.
Have been ripped off just once by a blaggart in Austria.
You just have to be careful, I think that I got greedy and was stung.!!
If its to good to be true, it is!!
The only problem with sales is that the byer can change his mind and claim the watch was no good etc.
Just be careful.

I forgot to say, I only ever sold to UK buyers and those with a decent amount of positive feedback.

I occasionally wonder about selling mine, but a 50s vintage rolex on ebay? Everyone would think its a scam, its not the best place to sell something like that.

I have sold and bought a few watches on ebay,I allways look for good feedback 20 plus and not just £1 items but along the same lines as I am dealing in.UK buyers only.I like to use pay pal as I feel safer and for the speed,it can cost a bit.Allways have proof of postage and post next day delivery to be signed for, send to pay pal address only, this costs about £10.If I have paper work I photo copy it and keep it and keep photos even ones not in the advertisement.I allway pull the money out of pay pal the day it comes in and in to my bank. The last watch I sold was on here(PH),a omega speedmaster triple calendar and used pay pal for the money side of the deal.Same rules,we both had good feedback on Ebay, unlike ebay we gave out home phone number to each other and address at the very begining. My last Ebay watch sale was this

Make your self some rules and it should go smooth.Good luck

I sold two of my collection on Ebay recently. I took careful photos of each watch and the paperwork for the site, checked carefully the history of each bidder, and had not the slightest problem. Both were over £2,000. Yes, it was my first time too and it is a worry, but a success though.

thanks all. I think if I go the Ebay route I will insist on meeting the buyer for the transaction and in a high street bank so I can verify the cash is kosher! This scam where the buyer says the watch is fake and sends you back a dodgy one scares me too much to do a postal transaction.

Cheers, Noggin.

I have bought a couple of hi value watches on ebay; a WG Day Date, a YG Chronomat Evolution and even a Platinum Day Date with diamond dial. Quite an interesting story about the latter.

My usual MO is to fly over from Cyprus, where I live, and meet the vendor in the NATWEST in their local town - this has meant trips to Newcastle, Cardiff and - for the Platinum watch - Stoke on Trent. I then inspect the watch and withdraw the cash within the safety of the Bank.

However, when I flew over to London for the Stoke on Trent watch, on a Saturday, my plane was 4 hours late and I knew I would not get to Stoke in time before the local Bank closed. So, I toured London to find a NATWEST which was open AND had sufficient cash ( I had previously contacted the Stoke NATWEST to ensure they had the funds , before my trip). After trying one or two, with a BIG fat envelope of cash tucked under my coat (we are talking £five figures!) I caught a train to Stoke, met the vendor in the station carpark, inspected the watch as best I could with my loupe, handed over the cash and made my way back to Cyprus!

Yup, I have to be both a serious watch collector and crazy to travel 4000 miles every time I want to buy a watch!

I've bought and sold tens of thousands of pounds worth of watches on ebay, with only one problem that was resolved. Just use common sense and don't allow bids from anyone who looks remotely dodgy.
