At that kind of money I'd rather go with a Sinn or Omega frankly. Nothing against the watch and if it floats your boat then it's a personal choice.

Ball can do no wrong in my eyes. I bought my Engineer Master II Diver new for a great price a couple of years ago and I adore it - I wear it pretty much every day and still find myself glancing at it from time to time. Beautifully engineered and solidly built, it looks and feels like it should be worth a lot more than the asking price. Some Balls are a bit too expensive to justify but most are awesome. If you're looking for an Engineer Hydrocarbon chrono may I suggest you go for a US market limited edition Trieste as it's got T100 lume as opposed to the T25 that most watches are restricted to. To be fair other companies do it too but imho Ball does it best.

Hmm. I like the tritium - I really like it - but the Engineer Hydrocarbon watches just seem a bit "generic dive watch" to me.

That said, I really like some of the Trainmasters - in particular, the Trainmaster Even Arabic:

Only Hydrocarbon I like is the Trieste chrono, I agree about some of the others in that range being a little uninspired.

I've never owned a Ball watch, although I have been curious about them for years. How effective are the tubes? Which other manufacturers use them?

Maybe I should just buy one and see....?



ETA - those Traser watches use them don't they?

Tracer and Nite watches both use them but afaik neither company can hold a candle to Ball's designs and history, if that's important to you. The tubes are not as bright as fully charged lumniova but the laatter loses its glow in a matter of hours whereas the tubes will last a hell of a lot longer (12 years constant glow, roughly, then half life comes into it and it all gets a bit complicated) and look damn cool to boot. Like I said, I love mine - Silfridges, Jura Watches and certain branches of Ernest Jones stockt them now so go and have a look.

like them. nearly bought an Enginner hydrocarbon but something else popped up.

There is an AD in Leeds had a good look at them different but seem very well made.
