Got the call!!
Discussion
Well I got woken this morning by a phone call I wasn't expecting!!
It was from a local jeweller and rolex AD. The nice man informed me that they had a white face daytona in stock and I was next on the list
.
Now I have been on the waiting list for this watch for over 3 years and I really wanted a white face one as well, but when I first put my name down the rrp on a daytona was about £4800, am I right in thinking the rrp now is £6100
I do still really want the watch but can't help but think that £6k is a shed load of money, can the price rise of rolexes continue like they have over the last 3 years, will anyone pay £10k for a new daytona in say 10 years time?
If I buy the daytona and decide in a month or two that I just can't justify keeping it in the collection will I be able to get my money back easily or has the current economy put a real downer on the luxury goods market(ie stuff we don't really need).
Being really cynical, have I just had the call after all this time because the jeweller is having trouble shifting daytonas at their previous premium.
Any thoughts or comments much appreciated, oh and they will keep the watch until saturday before it goes to the next person on the list!!!

I am not thinking of buying to sell but we have plans to move this year and just wondered if I need too would I be able to get my money back, not interested in making anything just getting what I spend back.
It will probably only go towards paying gordon and his cronies some of the 3% stamp duty they will want to steal from me!!

Not blame Rolex, blame Gordon Brown and the Bank of England for destroying the value of the pound

I've seen tons in the US. New and used. not worth it IMHO.
Nice watch, but not worth the BS.
And that's the problem. I really like the Daytona, but I turned down 2 from an AD in Europe mostly due to the £/Euro bollocs meaning they were sooo much more expensive than UK MSRP. That and the Burlington Arcade sitting on heaps to 'Up' the re-sale price...Nice watch, but not worth the BS.

Be careful, the whole rolex market has been built on demand exceeding supply, hence the good second hand price, but demand has dropped, they keep increasing the price so people go, my watch is now worth.... but this is not sustainable once the dealers start to have several of them in stock, unsold, which is beginning, then the discounting begins, once it begins there are a lot of people who consider their rolex to be as good as cash and if they see the price dropping, how many will want to hang on to it. Rolex make 2000 watches per day, they have to sell all of these every day or the price drops.
They're a great watch, but they weren't worth 4800, they're not worth 6100, if you can afford to keep it no matter what, then go for it, if you may need to trade it in for moving, then i'd leave it at the dealers, like the people who were above you on the list
I would love to see historical data of the price of the daytona, both in real terms and compared to the swiss franc
Thanks for all the comments.
I have to agree with piquet, I don't think daytona's are worth £6170 and they will definately not sustain another price increase, but I have wanted one for years and it will fit into my little chrono collection nicely, just told the wife we won't be moving this year.
Unfortunately I haven't picked it up today due to the bank not clearing the funds quickly enough but I have been in and tried it on and will be collecting it in the morning.
I have to say it was a lot smaller than I remember, but I think this is due to the size of my other watches, breitling bentley motors and an ebel tarawa chrono, which are both 44mm plus.
The new clasp design is absolutely stunning and a great improvement on the old one, can't wait till the morning.
Just on another point was looking in the said AD's window and noticed a white faced milgauss and gotta say I wasn't that impressed but I do think they look good with the green glass.
Will post some pics tomorrow.

er, not quite right, that may apply to a handful of watches (SS Daytona, green glass Milgaus, new Sea Dweller) but doesn't explain why the majority of Rolex production holds its value so well.As an observation, isn't it always the case that when things are pure unobtanium everybody wants it, and now when the market has stalled they change their ideas? Frankly I've never been bitten by the Daytona bug - well, except the four wheeled one that is. I think there are far better watches for the money out there. To me the Daytona myth was always built around its unavailability.
Lowdrag agree there are probably better watches out there for the money but I have always wanted one and it's an itch that has to be scratched. It was the same when I bought my tuscan I new it was goinig to be a whole world of pain and cost but again I'd always wanted one and after some major problems with brand new mercs and bmw's I thought why not? On the plus side since I have had the car I haven't had any major problems and now know it is a keeper perhaps the daytona will be the same or perhaps one or more of my watches will get traded in in a few years for something else, only time will tell(excuse the pun) I have always fancied a platinum president with the ice blue face!!!
On my way to the AD's now.
