Grandfather's Rolex
Discussion
Hi all in the watch section - hopefully you can give me an answer to some idle questions!
I've had my grandfather's old Rolex for a while, and I've started to wear it from time to time. However, when I got the strap adjusted I was told that really it could do with a new one as the old one's very "loose" in the links and may give up the ghost. Additionally the glass is pretty scratched and it could probably do with a good clean.
Here are a couple of photos to give you a vague idea:

So, my questions are:-
1) Does anyone have a rough idea of how much a service, new glass and a new bracelet would cost?
2) Is it worth getting them done?
and finally
3) How much, roughly, is it worth so that I can be sure it's covered by insurance?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Nice watch, it look's like a 1002/0 chronometer with the original box and bill of sale.1) Does anyone have a rough idea of how much a service, new glass and a new bracelet would cost?

1.A service at Rolex will be c£200, and a new bracelet (jubilee but a different profile) is c£400.
2.Look at getting a local independant Rolex watchmaker to do the work (quicker and cheaper), try and find a replacement bracelet online, as a modern replacemnt will look like a set of BBS LM's on an E-Type (nice, but not right).
3.All done insure it for £3000 on a 'new for old' policy.
Nice..
DH.
What a WONDERFUL thing to have, what with the original bill and everything. 98 quid....

Send it to Rolex for a service and it will come back like NEW for 200 quid.
Lovely lovely thing. Treasure it, sir, because of whose it was. You are very lucky to have it. I still have my father's watch which he was wearing when he passed away. It stopped one hour later. It will remain unwound.

That is a lovely timepiece. get an estimate from Rolex for service and as previously said it will come back gleaming.
In a similiar vein, an aunt recently gave me the Omega watch her eldest brother was wearing when he was fatally shot down over Kent in 1940. Having been in her drawer for 65 years or so its never been serviced, still looks like looks new, and on the rare occasions when I wear it it keeps as good a time, if not better than, the my modern Omega's.
A cherished link with my uncle who obviously I never knew.

I'm amazed he kept the receipt - apparently his reply to my grandmother's "how much was THAT?" question when he first bought it was a sheepish "I can't remember dear".

I'm in two minds whether I want it to look like new, or to keep it with 38 years' worth of wear showing, but at least now it's properly insured.
At some point in the future it'll be someone else's to look after though, so I should probably keep it as nice as possible!Gassing Station | Watches | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
