In general really, although I'm looking at a Seiko (probably a Monster thumbup) for my next buy.

How accurate are they? I've only ever had quartz up to now, which will keep near perfect time until the battery starts to die. Is a weekly time set just a part of owning a 'better' watch?

Date...? I had a cheapo watch with a day/date window a few years back, and while the day section was fine, every other month I had to reset the date because the dial went to 31 every time irked - less than ideal when I wanted the watch to tell me the date, not the other way around! Are all analogues like this, or is there some clever trickery that makes them get it right?

A Monster will probably run about 10 seconds/day.

All analougues like that unless you get a perpetual calender, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you want a watch that automatically adjusts the date at the end of each month, then you will have to PAY!! biggrin

It's really not a big deal though, and only once a month obviously wink

(don't do it in the evening though, as it can bugger up the mechanism)

I think an Annual Calendar complication will get the days of the month right as well - doesn't have to be a perpetual calendar.

You can get a Seiko Kentic perpetual calendar for a few hundred pounds.

Are Seiko Kinetics classed as automatics ? Wrist movement is just used to charge a battery isn't it ?

Yep. Or capacitor, as they prefer to call them. hehe

As I posted elsewhere, I bought a Seiko Monster 17 days back and it is now 10 seconds out. My IWC Spitfire gains 4 seconds a day yet the Seiko costs 4% of the IWC price. Money doesn't buy accuracy, but knowing you have a bit of real engineering on your wrist and not an electronic gizmo is part of the pleasure of watch collecting.

just a point to note - all seiko kinetics are quartz! they are just powered by movement not a battery.

but yes, some of them do have annual and perpetual calendar functions.

Spring Drive is seikos combination of kinetic and mechanical technologies, but they aren't cheap!

Seiko Kinetics are powered by movement, but regulated by the quartz crystal resonance.

Even a top-flight auto will be +/- 4secs/day, a £10 Casio is far more accurate. But don't confuse technology with craftmanship...

automatics yes, just not "mechanical automatics"
