Guys,

Can anybody recommend a good outdoor activity watch that has some useful functions and doesn't cost the earth (it will be used hard). Stuff like compas, altimeter, temp guage, potentially some kind of weather prediction would be great if it exists. Not really too keen on heart rate monitors.

Budget will be a couple of hundred £, maybe up to £350

Many thanks,

Shabs

Suunto Vector or Core will do the trick. The Casios may be worth a look also but I've never had one so can't really comment; my vector is used practically on the hills and does what you need, the core is a little more advanced (weather alarm etc) and should be good now they've sorted out the first generation faults.

I have a Casio Protrek Prg80 which I bought from e-bay for £65. New they are about £130.

Does everything you want and is pretty rugged. If it is good enough for Navy Seals its good enough for me.

Certainly survived a trip to Go-ape at the weekend!

Here's mine

second the Pro-Trek.

I've got one of the All-round versions (never remember the number) that includes, Alt, Bar and Compass. It's also Atomic controlled and runs off the Sun. It'll never die!!

I've got a core and it hasn't let me down yet, although might be going off to Suunto soon as it has an appetite for batteries.

If you do get one, make sure the serial no starts 0910xxxx or newer, to make sure you get one of the newer modified batch. The earlier ones (08xxxxxx and earlier) are known to have a couple of hiccups.
