Hi all,

First post in this forum.

I am in the lucky position that I have a wife that has offered to buy me a new watch. Budget is up to £5k. I have an eye on a Rolex Submariner or GMT-Master II. I would like a watch that is proven and will last a lifetime. I wanted something chunky as I already have a Cartier dress watch and would like something bigger. That said, I also think that something like a Patek may be a bit more appropriate as a gift of this sort.

If I were to go for a Patek, I would be inclined to buy something else in the future as well, but cheaper. Maybe a Bell and Ross or similar.

All thoughts, suggestions and advice welcome.

Cheers.

Black/steel sub date 16610, i think they come in around 4k. Classic watch and hard wearing, goes well with most clothing too! Had no problems at all with mine and it keeps excellent time, wouldnt swap it for anything

Now is the time to try and find a dealer who still has a Seadweller. Rolex have just discontinued the model and they're going to all be proper classics in years to come.

That would be my choice smile (and I have a Sub date)

Seadweller is a good option. I like the idea that it is discontinued.

It may be a stupid question, but how does a Seadweller differ from the Submariner and GMT? I really need to go and try all three on to get a feel for it.

Seadweller has a smaller diameter face but is a lot lot heavier than the sub> I have both but wear the SD on a daily basis- is so much more substantial it makes the Sub feel almost toy like!

Same 'looking' Oyster case but much heavier - doesn't have the date cyclops because of the thicker crystal and that it's rated to 4,000ft.

Also the only mainstream Rolex to have writing on the back IIRC- 'Original gas escape valve' for the helium release (titanium valve at 9 o'clock) and 'Rolex' with a couple of crowns.

I was in Italy recently and every man and his dog had a Rolex on (real or otherwise...) and I didn't see one SD.

In fact, I haven't seen another SD since I got mine 1.5yrs ago - apart from a colleague who got one after seeing mine.

Love mine to peices - it's rarely off unless I'm going somewhere smart where one of my others would be more suitable.

And this is the GMT - Master II (on my wrist, so not really bias!
Has the latest strap same as the Daytona, top quality! Square shoulders and ceramic outer dial with 24 hr marking.

And the Chopard - he did say big and chunky!!

Seadweller, good choice, also vintage Subs, can come in around this price and should be a sound investment as well as a decent watch. Just find a good dealer and you will be fine (a few out there). Ive got three subs and they are exactly what you say you need.

I am going to look into the Seadweller. Are they still available?

I appreciate it is an entirely different style of watch, but any views on the Patek?

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Dont have a patek and always thought I should have due to the reputation but cant get on with the style and they are too delicate for my tastes (or just ugly), from what ive heard though you are buying into a dynasty with one but be prepared for expensive servicing etc (even compared to rolex). I had the same view on Lange so got one, opened the box, didnt like it and sold it on, it takes a while to establish what type of watch suits you and your personality. As a dress watch ive got a Glasshute Pano Reserve, its a bit chunkier than Patek and probably not as good in terms of quality but I like it on the rare occasions when i wear it. With that much money you really do have a lot to choose from so dont feel rushed into things or by names or reputations (or people on Pistonheads!

You need to save your pennies and go for a Patek Phillipe have a look at the 2009 model Nautilus, the benefit of wearing a Patek is that you very rarely come across someone else wearing one,the problem with Rolex is that everybody and his brother is now wearing one.

The added benefit is that in time the Patek will always go up in value

I think that this is good advice. The trouble is, I don't like any of the Patek watches other than the very traditional styles - which rules out the Nautilus.

Any thoughts on Bell and Ross in terms of quality?

Not so sure about this one - I don't like the additional dials.

I wear a Seadweller every day; after a few weeks of getting used to having something this heavy on my wrist, I now wouldn't wear anything else.

It's ludicrously expensive for what it is (a Casio quartz keeps better time), but it's not ostentatious and you're unlikely ever to see another one.
