I was wondering what he wore, and of course some nutters have taken the time to research it for us :

To cut a long story short, it's from the Secret Service gift shop and worth $325.

Yeah. Given that he and his government are owned by Goldman Sachs you'd have thought that they'd kit Obama out with the sort of timepiece that senior GS partners commonly wear, no? /snark

Check owners of watches numbers 41 and 43.

Any idea of prices for these chintzy abominations ?

I know, I know, if you have to ask ...

Well the watch itself seems a well-made item from quality materials. The movement is probably a top or chrono spec 2892, they make no mention of who supplies the movement (indeed there is little talk of 'movements' at all on the webpage).

It's not overdesigned, it's plain enough, it ought to last given servicing (that most-probably-ETA movement does give me some cause for concern) - $8500 is overpriced but it's nowhere near as overpriced as some major Swiss names.

TBH if I was in the market for a watch like that then I'd be terribly boring and pick the Patek Calatrava like everyone else. Or just wear my vintage gold JLC instead. However it does sound like this 'Clare' watch is a much 'chunkier' piece of gold - which could be fun for bling value hehe

Anyway - there's nothing wrong with the Clare watch. The negative reaction is just snobbery from a bunch of Brits reading an American website that's full of cod-classical music, images of 'tradition' and 'heritage' and all that BS. I must admit I snorted into my gin & tonic when the webpage opened...

hehe
