So, I am going to be getting myself an IWC Porto Auto. Its going to be an everyday wearer but I am concerned that a 42mm case is going to get some damage from my cufflinks.

Any sagely wisdom out there about how to prevent this, or if this is even an issue?

Unless you wear your watch face down it's very unlikely to be an issue. Don't think I'ver ever had cufflink rash.

The buckle or deployant clasp may pick up a few scratches, mostly from coming into contact with a desk though if you are overly concerned about your cufflinks touching your watch, perhaps you could use the silk knot style when you are wearing the IWC?

I have a set of Dunhill cufflinks that are scratched to buggery now, probably from where my cuffs rub the desk - typing, mouse use etc but my watches are generally hidden under the cuff - obviously size of watch makes a difference here. As an example, My Omega SMP and Rolex GMT fit under and stay nicely hidden and protected whereas my Fortis B-42 (which is very similar to an IWC Pilot in size, shape etc) will not fit under.

I wear cufflinks everyday, and have never noticed a problem with cufflinks. The IWC Portuguese are all on croc straps, this will be the part of the watch in possible contact with the links.

Got a good deal on the Portuguese?....

I had issues with a Breitling Hercules and some 'chain' type cufflinks.

I'm not sure that I understand. You want the IWC to be a daily wear, but you're worried about damage from the cufflinks? you're more likely to get scratches cuts and swirls from a plethora of other incidental contact. if you are that concerned, you may want to reconsider using it as a daily wear, as no matter what you do, it's going to get a bit nicked up.

Reminds me of the old Georgia Satellites song 'Battleship Chains'...
