I have had my name down at a couple of ADs for this particular model for about 15 months. Whilst out and about on Saturday another AD approx 10 miles away had one in the window. I had been in there a week earlier and he had one but it was on deposit and he said they had six people on the waiting list so it seems strange that all of a sudden one was available

My view is that a lot of people who had initially expressed an interest had either hoped to sell them on straight away for a quick profit( a la stainless daytona) or are having second thoughts because of the credit crunch

Anyway- what is the best discount anyone has got on one of these?. I was offered 5%- but it was not enough to make me take the plunge... would be interested to hear

Cheers

Stuart

Can't help on the discount, but I've definitely noticed that the Rolex display in your average AD has perked up noticeably over the past year, and I think that it must be to do with people choosing not to exercise their option on "grail" watches.

I'm surprised at how often you now see a pair of Milgauss (both faces), a deep sea and even an occasional SS Daytona. It used to be (in my home town of Kingston at least) that you'd only ever see bi-metal nastiness from across the range, and a Sub.

Dom- thanks for the mail
Stuart- Yep I was in Kingston as I live over in Richmond. Noticed they had the green milgauss, LV Submariner and also the Deep sea. I can only surmise too it must be the recession

Spend time on the various watch forums, most of what you mention have been offered new at a much better discount than 5%. As you say, the CC has taken the shine off the new "must haves". I think some people take delivery against their financial means rather than lose face with the dealer. This normally presents its self as an advert going something like:

"I just bought my second <insert what ever model you like> because I love them so much. Unfortunately I just don't wear it enough,......"

On the DSSD you need to try one because they are bloody massifffff, "in it",....

Oh, and waiting lists are for mugs. It basically means the dealer doesn't consider you a likely source of income in the future. Go into any dealer ask about any of their 100k watches and say you'd like a SS daytona (or what ever) as well and see how quickly one appears.

I think you are right - high-end watches must be one of the most discretionary spend items out there, the majority of such watches must be bought with windfall money (bonus, inheritance etc) and even for the keen collector who might budget to buy a piece or two each year, the uncertain times will have them thinking twice.

The £2k-£3k that you would have happily dropped on a watch 18 months ago when you were confident that the money would keep rolling in, would keep most people afloat for a month or two now if the worst were to happen.
