Was sorely tempted by one of the new-ish aluminium and rubber strapped watches by Bvlgari (diagono titanium or diagono rubber, both with carbon fibre faces....mmmm) whilst recently on holiday. It looked lovely in the flesh (sorry can't do links). The one I really liked was only water resistant to 30 - 50 feet, so of bugger all use to me, (so I bought a Visconti pen instead!). Anyway, what do the watch cognescenti think of Bvlgari watches generally. Well made or just a bit of a side line to the age old (and very good) jewellery reputation?

Bulgari are not seen as a "proper" watch brand.

Essentially, they are a jewellry brand. They do not I believe make their own movements, but rather buy a generic movement and stick it inside a watch carrying their branding.

The watch snobs ( of which I would count myself as one if I could afford a proper collection !) would argue that a watch company has to make their own movements and carry out the engineering themselves to be a "proper" watch brand. Brands like Rolex, Jaeger le Couture, Patek Phillipe, Vacheron and the like all have a tradition of having high skilled engineers who design and develop every single piece of the watch and over many years establish a heritage.

A Bulgari watch is, I guess, a bit like a pair of designer jeans. It was probably made in the same factory as a much cheaper watch brand, but they bling it up and charge more for the Bulgari brand.

Unless someone comes along and points out that Bulgari make their own movements, I believe this to be the case. smile

Thanks topps. That was exactly what I was asking. Nothing more to say but thanks again for your trouble.

They use the same movements as many other high end brands, including some COSC ones.

Some are great looking watches and are jewelelry as well as being good watches.
