Nomos or Georg Jensen - what are your thoughts
Discussion
Hi,
Just starting to get interested in watches and am still very much at home-base when it comes to knowledge.
I'm looking for a good dress type watch, however, and after scanning recent threads, the current fave seems to be the Nomos Ludwig

Also wondered about Georg Jensen watches. I've not seen any mention of them through the search option. Are they all style over substance or would this represent a good alternative to the Nomos. One I'm considering is

I'm looking for the same kind of thing (my pref was the Nomos TANGENTE), particularly something quite slim.
Junghans may also be worth a look ( http://www.junghanswatches.co.uk/ ) - The Max Bill range took my eye.

For me, Nomos every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Really lovely watches, in-house movements (though some derived from a Peseaux movement) and the absolute epitome of that elegant minimalist style.
Nearly did a deal on a Tangomat a little while back but we couldn't quite agree the price ...
Especially galling as I bought an Anonimo instead which I didn't get on with and have sold already ...

Hell, those Nomos movements look incredibly nice - and remarkably similar to some of the Glashütte Original movements....
Just what is the relationship between the non-Lange manufactures in Glashütte? There's GO, obviously, then there's Union Glashütte (still going?), Nomos, and someone else I've forgotten. I know that they all pretty much use their own movements - Nomos started with ETA but modified it beyond recognition and it's their own now AFAIK. GO and Lange obviously have their own reputations.
So on a movement-snob basis the Nomos wins immediately, without any argument whatsoever. For the price, it's a no-brainer if you like their house design language.
However I do really like the Max Bill design (made by Junghans from an ETA 7750) - sadly the exquisite minimalism of the photos is unlikely to show up in reality since the ETA 7750 is a fat movement. The pictures make it look like the watch is as thin as a Patek ultra thin but it's likely to be 15-20 mm thick in reality due to that 7750
Shame, since the design is absolutely superb.
With this choice, however much I like the Max Bill, I'd go for the Nomos unless you have a problem with hand-wound movements.

Nomos are independent.Lange are owned by Richemont
GO are owned by Swatch. Union Glashütte used to be the second brand of GO and used less highly decorated GO movements and some really lovely designs. Unfortunately they have been re-positioned in the Swatch portfolio and now use ETA movements in rather uninspiring designs.
Edited to add: perhaps the "other" one you were thinking of is Mühle Glashütte? They use ETA I think.

Thanks All - I figured Nomos would get more of a thumbs up, and TBH it's where my preference lies. Nonetheless would still be interested to know if Georg Jensen has a good name/quality.
I looked at the Junghans Max Bill & Stowa watches which also have a lovely simple clear face, but I'm swayed in the decision towards Nomos v Georg Jensen.
Next key question .........Does anyone know the best place to go to get the Nomos Ludwig ?
Thanks again
Peter
