Bought it yesterday, new watch but it had been on display for 'some months'. Trouble is it's gaining about 5-6 MINUTES (not seconds) every hour. The second hand is visibly going too fast - will this sort itself out in a matter of days/weeks or is it likely something very wrong? Nb: watch had been on display and stopped for at least a few months.

Usually 'running too fast' means the balance amplitude is much too low, usually caused by not enough power in the mainspring. The Seiko 5 movement in the Monster doesn't allow for manual winding, so you can't just wind it up to maximum tension and see whether there's still a problem.

You need to get that mainspring wound up to see whether the problem is in the movement or whether it's just down to very low power. If there's undue friction in the geartrain then the balance may not see enough torque and you'll get this low amplitude = fast running effect. Obviously there could be other problems, but that's the first one I could think of...

That sounds like you balance spring (hairspring) is a bit gummed up. Maybe it'll free itself up, but a service would help (or return it i guess)

Thanks guys, I've been advised to let it run down, give it a 'tap' and then wake it up - told it ought to free up the hairspring...
